If you know where they live and are a bit scared to tell the parents, send them a note saying kids will be kids, but it's gone on a bit too long now and I'm not very well. I don't want to cause any problems and I don't want them to get into trouble either. It is a struggle for me so can you have a word?
Then, every time it happens, call the police. And write it down. Have them on speed dial. The police will get so hacked off with you, it will be sorted. You shouldn't feel like a prisoner n your own home. Maybe if the parents did find out, they will go ballistic and won't be able to apologise enough(maybe).
This is what I think you should do. If it was me though-a young, fit ex boxer with a sandwich short, I would think nothing of taking the week off work and sitting in the hedge waiting for them-that I don't recommend!
My taxes pay for the police and I'm happy to do it-and you shouldn't worry about calling them-that is what they are there for.
Hope it stops soon.

Call the cops. Don't get involved on a personal level, then it could just get messier. Call the cops and let the appropriate authorities handle it. Tell the police when you call you want to remain anonymous. I'm sure if the kids are doing this to you they're doing it to other people in the neighborhood, so they'll have no clue who called. The cops will at least send a squad car out and talk to the little bastards. And don't ever tell anyone in your neighborhood that you called the cops. Otherwise the punks could seek revenge. If anyone ever does find out and says anything, like 'how could you call the cops on my child??', who cares. If someone breaks the law and damages your property or your peace of mind, you have every right to call the cops. And lastly, I'd buy a professional looking sign that says "Warning: This area monitored by security surveillance cameras." Or get real security cameras with it. Good luck!

I used to do this myself, lol. Here are a few ideas. They get worse as they go down, lol.
Chances are they are doing this at around the same time every day, you and whoever is living there with you take turns on watch. Try to open the door just before they get to it, getting caught should deter them. It deterred me and my friends.
Set up a camera and try catch them by opening the door and scaring the crap out of them, tell them you'll post the video on youtube if they ever do it again.
Connect the door bell to a car battery or something, something low volt, giving them a little shock. This could backfire though, either they will use your doorbell to trick some of their mates into pressing it for fun or you will get someone you know.
Rub crap on it, hard to find a brown doorbell though.
Later,
Fly.

Stand by the door, ready for the next one. Peek out the window, and when the little kid reaches for the doorbell...throw the door open and scare the **** out of the kid. Worked for me the other day!!! Don't call the police- It's silly and a waste of their time. You can always call the parents of the children and tell them of the childrens' actions.

Use your creativity:
-electrically charge the doorbell
-Tripwires
-get a dog, preferably a pit bull
-get an alarm that makes a really loud noise
-wait at the door and jump out at them
-or, since they are kids, give them candy....maybe something special in it?
-ring their doorbell and run
They want to start a game? Let the fun begin, i say.

They are just children possibly not knowing that they are annoying you. For all I know they do that for fun and without malice. If they have fun doing this that does not make them dumb. During our childhood days all of us could have done something mischievious without the intention to annoy others.
Children are governed by their temperanceand little desires...they are playful.
Grown ups are governed by reasoning and you should be handling this in a sensible way. Call up their parents and if that doesnt work get the police to approach them. Retributive measures against the kids would encourage them to repel and you may end up getting more nuisance.
Your issue would be how to find an amicable solution, not to compound it.......

Turn off the doorbell. If someone wants to reach you they will knock on the door.
The kids will forget all about it and you can hook up the doorbell again next month.

Damn children, what is the world coming to, children wanting to play. Such innocence can be a little bit annoying but not so bad.
Finally you must rise up and be better and get in touch with your inner child.
What trick or game can you play on them to get the better of them.
Hmmmm......
Maybe a rewire your door bell to say "Damn kids, stop ringing my door bell". It is not as hard as you think, I once took the chip from a musical greet card and made my door bell play I wish you a merry christmas at christmas time.
Best to let children be children before they get into drugs and modern life.

Put chilli on the doorbell button so next time they do it will get on thier finger and then they'll probably stick that finger up thier nose or in thier mouth at some point after and get a little shock.
Not too much chilli though!
