It's a loft if it's big and has an industrial past or look to it, particularly if it's 2 story. The smaller units are called studios or, in a by-gone era, efficiency.

Its refered to as a flat by some,although that is mostly a british term and it is interchangeable with apartment in some circles. Flat. That's my final answer. :)
