There's a group of horrible neighborhood kids. They throw garbage in our yard, terrorize our dogs, kick our trash can, and do nothing but cause trouble. Recently, they've been ringing our doorbell and darting off. It wouldn't be so bad except that they do it at least once a week and it drives my dogs crazy, and my dogs wont stop barking for like half an hour.

I went out a few minutes ago and caught them and yelled, "Please stop ringing my doorbell, thank you." Is that too kind? Do I need to be meaner? Threaten to call the cops? I'm tired of it. Please help.

ps.
their parents are complete jerks and hate us more than their kids do. i seriously think that they're parents are putting them up to it. they've put dog **** on our steps and thrown mud at the garage door, and their parents got mad that we accused their children, but we have neighbors telling us they saw those kids do it.

Call the cops. Don't get involved on a personal level, then it could just get messier.
Call the cops and let the appropriate authorities handle it. Tell the police when you call you want to remain anonymous. I'm sure if the kids are doing this to you they're doing it to other people in the neighborhood, so they'll have no clue who called. The cops will at least send a squad car out and talk to the little bastards.
And don't ever tell anyone in your neighborhood that you called the cops. Otherwise the punks could seek revenge. If anyone ever does find out and says anything, like 'how could you call the cops on my child??', who cares. If someone breaks the law and damages your property or your peace of mind, you have every right to call the cops.
And lastly, I'd buy a professional looking sign that says "Warning: This area monitored by security surveillance cameras." Or get real security cameras with it. Good luck!

If you know where they live, tell their parents - it will probably work more effectively than the police. Threatening to call the police might be a better solution than just asking them, though.

Throwing garbage in your yard, terrorizing your dog, kicking your trash can - these kids are a nuisance that you should NOT have to deal with. My solution would be to escalate it to the parents - then if the problem doesn't go away because some parents think their kids **** gold and would never do something like that then find out what you can do with the help of the police. I don't think you're allowed to just throw garbage in someone's yard or kick their trash can wantonly - you have a right to live peacefully on your own property.

Yes, too nice. The iced doorstep wouldn't work because they'd sue you. But find something comprable.

We had kids that would play mailbox baseball. So, they'd bash everyone's mailbox down. Well, Dad got a 6" x 6" stud, dug 5 feet into the ground, and put our mailbox ontop of that. It had a few dents in it that week, but the mailbox stood firm. They never messed with it again.

Perhaps a zapper doorbell? Or you have some trap for them and wait? Money attached to string that springs water? You can call the cops and see what they DO suggest.

Go get Video camera 'camera's and conceal them around your house and if the parents don't want to do any thing the the police would gladly take a look at the tapes ,just make sure you put cameras hi enough and hidden ,and get some motion detectors hooked to lighting to illuminate the front of the house when some one comes near ,the motion censor will do the work 24/7 ,and don't tell a sole about them ,all this has to be done in secret ,take your time and do it right .

Our neighbors kids do that too. i told their mom and step dad. the mom said" they are just having fun" My dogs to would bark for like 1/2 hour and that in turn got the other neighbors mad because my dogs were barking. finally i spoke to their real dad what was going on. he said he has no control over what happens in their moms house. calling the cops may not be the best answer because you will need proof and the kids may lie about it. no they will lie about it.document the best you can what they do and when you get enough evidence go to the parents with a copy and tell them that this is what has been happening. they may not know or care, then ask them to ask the kids to stop. document you asked the parents to ask the kids to stop. if it continues go to the police with the list. they may come out and speak to the kids. get the neighbors to back up your evidence if possible. good luck my situation got resolved because she lost one he wanted to live with dad the step father lost visitation rights for his son because of his meth use and the little one was always a follower

You need to set up a camera and catch these kids red handed! Film them coming and ringing the doorbell and then go to their houses and tell their parents! Let their parents deal with them! And if you might be too scared or shy to confront the parents alone, find some more people to come with you. Surely you cant be the only one these kids are terrorizing?

Step 1: Get a rifle that LOOKS nice

Step 2: Talk to one kid in the neighborhood that isn't a pile of %#@* i mean, poop, and tell them to pretend to join for this plan.

Step 3: When the gang walks up to the house, come out with the rifle, and if they don't back off (be sure the gun is unloaded) pump the gun and pull the trigger. Be sure to aim at the kid, and the gun will make noise. The others will not notice their is no ammo, and if the kid acts like he's dead, they won't come back ever again.

I think what I would do is disconnect the doorbell when they do that, and do not give them the satisfaction of letting them piss you off, and if you do get that upset, just call the police and tell them what is going on, I do have another route ? you can e mail me, if you live in my town, I have an 80 pound American Staffshire Terrier with lock jaw and he love to shut up other dogs and if this is for Miss Cyran I can bring 20 or 30 brothers ? we can easily talk to the parents, I'm sure when I have the brothers with me they will handle your problem.

put a zapper in your doorbell and shock the little brats..lol im kidding. If you have a video camera I would record any time i see them do something... once you have enough and you catch one of them tell them that you have them on camera and you are going to the police if they dont stop. Tell them they have to clean up the mess they put in your yard too... Bet that'll straighten them out! If you just go to the cops you run the risk of parents defending their kids and saying they were at home at the time of the incident.. no parent wants to pay for tickets their kids get. good luck!

Sooo many things you could do...
I don't know if I should even say. Got a paintball gun? I guess you could call the cops, but they're not really going to be able to much. Take a picture of them if you get the chance and tell them that if it happens again, you're gonna call the cops.
That's a tough one because kids are usuially pretty hard to catch.
When I was a kid I did all kinds of crap like that, and the only times I ever got busted is when one of my buddies narked us out. (Darn you Matt).
