It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk workd war 3.
Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).
The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when is the apacolypse, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.
Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

When WW III does break out, it will be over Oil. Petrol is one resource that every countries would go to war over. Petrol drives economy and every nation's military runs on oil.
A likely scenario is that once the supply of the oil diminish to the point where it can no longer adequately supply the major powers (US, China, and European Union) there will be conpetition to woo the leading petrol producers. Failing that, they may decide to seize for themselves through military powers. Evey nations have set aside military petrol reserve. If you recall, Japan went to war when their militrary petrol reserve was down to only 6 month. There is no question many nations will do the same, for the preservation of their state.

With things going just the way they are. It will start in the middle east, and be a worlwide nuclear holocaust. And, from the looks of things, won't be very long before it happens. The major powers are supplying the third world countries with the means to start it, and they certainly will, with Allah's blessing.
A sad thing, and we have only a year or two at best. Say your prayers now, and curse the towel heads, for they shall end the world as we know it. If not totally, considering the panicked button pushers in the USA, Russia, and China, in retaliation. End of days is near.

As someone famous once said:
"Don't know how it starts but it finishes with a mushroom cloud"
The world is doomed for human life due to our uncontrolled overpopulation, incredible disregard for spreading our polluting garbage, plastics and chemicals and unsustainable economy, and nothing you or anyone can do will stop this.
So, in order that the least possible people are around at the end, I highly recommend not having children your self.

It already happened.
It was called the "Cold War."
Just because the U.S., USSR, and Europe never faced the nuclear terror everyone feared, should we ignore the millions killed in Korea, the Middle East, Africa, Vietnam, and Latin America?
They were killed as part of the big-power competition. Just because they weren't Soviet, American or European citizens doesn't mean it wasn't a world war.

The act that could set it in motion may have already happened - the assassination of Benezar Bhuto may trigger the calamaty - Pakistan has lost its hope of stability, but still has bunkers full of nuclear weaponry. And President Bush is already talking about sending in troops.
