there was actually a music book put out a year or two ago, that is nothing but Ave Marias....I'd check under the Hal Leonard Publishing Co. website, because it sounds very much like something they'd issue. You'll find not only your standard Bach-Gounod and Schubert, but all of the other ones, that someone else was so kind as to list. I like the Bruckner one myself

The Barlowe & Morgenstern index lists Ave Maria's by:
Arcadelt
Bruckner
Cornelius
Dufay (Ave Masria Stella))
Bach-Gounod
Josquin des Pres
another one by Josquin des Pres
Kahn
Mascagni (words added to Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana)
Mendelssohn (Die Lorely)
Mozart
Schubert
Tosti
another one by Tosti (Ridonami la calma)
Verdi (scala enigmatica)
Vittoria
The Schubert version and the Bach-Gounod version are the best known.
Either one could be the one which you call "the traditional version."
The index somehow missed the one by Caccini.
If you still haven't found the composer, try some of these names in a Google search and give us another call.

The most common are the Schubert and Gounod/Bach versions. You are probably looking for the lesser known version by Caccini : here it is sung by Sumi Jo

the Ave Maria by Giulio Caccini does only repeat the two words "Ave Maria", nothing else.

You are not wrong in your phonetic spelling...ask the music director in you school or the choir person in your church...they should find it for you. Probably quicker than listining to excerps on Amazon or cduniverse.com to find the one you are looking for.
