I don't think lightning and thunder are the same. One is a light and the other is a sound. Sometimes you can have lightning but no thunder and vice versa. So technically speaking lightning has no sound.

Thunder is the only sound that comes from the sky.In earlier days ,probably, people might have thought that thunder was created by god and wanted to give a special name for it.All other sounds are created over the earth's surface or from the surface which are either man-made or nature-made.

The name may come from mythology. The gods of the heavens had names, like Thor, which may have become over time a word like thunder. The old english word is "thunor", a hybrid of Thor and Thunder.
Lots of things have names based on the sound they make. Like ring, ding, fizz, boing, bonk...
BTW, a rabbit that makes noise has a name: Thumper

The sound created has a name. The electrical energy sent out rises to 10,000 degrees Centigrade in just a few tens of microseconds. This heat kinda tears the air and a sonic boom is created. So, Thunder!!!

i think thunder and lighting were thought to be two entirely different things at some point in time. once we figured out they were the same thing it still made sense to keep the two separate names considering the amount of time that can elapse between lighting and the resulting thunder....so even though lighting is one event, it presents itself in two very different ways, which warrants two names......?..... not sure but it makes sense to me :)
