Did you know the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes The Weasel" refers to pawning. A weasel is a shoemaker’s tool and to "pop" is to pawn. "That’s the way the money goes...Pop goes the weasel."

Pawn shops have been around for hundreds of years. The three gold balls refer to the St. Nicholas story about the daughters who had no dowry with which to wed (couldn't find a husband without one) and St. Nicholas dropped a bag of gold into the window for each daughter. St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra, but I don't remember which century he lived in. He was a real person well-known for his generosity and holiness.
But of course, you knew that.

Hate to burst your bubble, but pawn shops have been around for centuries prior to the nineteenth. They were developed soon after currency was developed.

It wasn't me! I got lost on the way to the liquor store. I don't know how those things got in my pocket, really! The guy next door gave me those things. I would never do anything like that!
