You want to take the heat out so it stops the burning / damage... running under cool (not cold) water is very good.

Next you need to think about dressings... Initially you should use a gel type burn dressing (available at most drugstores by several brands - I think the Band-Aid brand has one for fingers for about $5 for the box.) You will find this gel type bandage to give you the most relief and help with the healing.

DO NOT put butter on a burn - that's an old wive's tale and it helps to hold in the heat so the burn gets worse.

Be very cautious of ointments and extra cautious of band-aids that have any loose gauze -- these can either affect the healing or get stuck in the wound as it heals. I can't stress using the right dressing strongly enough.

Run it under cold water for a few minutes. That should cool the burn. Then, wrap it in a bandage and don't mess with it unless you need to change the bandage.

Try an aloe lotion without oil, the oil will only make the burn worse. I really like Burts Bees aloe body lotion, it'll take a day or two but it does work.
