Why don't they stop? I think the problem lies with y/a search bar. Either it is not being used intentionally or it is oblivious to questioners or it's purpose is not understood by users of y/a.
It's clear that Jess and Ms Informed are misinterpreting your question or are new to the Astronomy section.
To Jess- It does not take an 'enigma' (whatever you mean by that) to disprove any and ALL 2012 hoaxes. This topic has NOT been heavily researched (unless by that you mean that there are lots of 2012 pseudowebsites and some TV shows spreading untruths about it). This is, contarily, one of the LEAST researched topics in my memory. That is precisely why there is so much confusion and misunderstanding of it. False doomsday scenarios are not the product of any research. It is the byproduct of pulling one over on a gullable uneducated public. It is the LACK of proper research that allows the unscrupulous to dump ANY doomsday scenario that can possibly be imagined onto the 2012 date and get away with it so easily. Spawned by an unregulated internet. It is not impossible to seperate truth from fiction, but this takes common sense and EFFORT. Both of which seem to be lacking in many web surfers.
What harm is caused? A lot! If an adult wants to believe that the world is going to end in five years, that's great. I could care less. But what about the children of this world? Do I actually need to tell you that it causes them harm? You probably don't have children. They need guidance and direction. They need to be reaffirmed by TRUTH. Not misled into mental and psychological harm thinking that the world is ending when it is in fact not. Think of the children who become hopeless or kill themselves in despair because they believe some doomsday lie. Your comment that it is harmless is ridiculous.
To Ms Informed- It is far more than just something to talk about. You don't go to school and talk to your peers about the end of the world just for kicks. Spreading false rumors that have no basis in fact is bad. It's immeasurably worse when the rumor is that the world is ending. It's unacceptable. Such talk has even been spread in schools by teachers.
Is there a choice not to participate? Yes. If you are morally apathetic. I could, in a similar way, also close my ears when someone yells "Fire!" or close my eyes when I witness a crime. To each his own I guess. Unlike some other categories on y/a, the Astronomy section is used for dispelling information and knowledge. Since none of the doomsday scenarios have proof as their foundation, people come here for proof AGAINST the scenarios. This information we are happy to share.

y/a just turned two years old. (December 2007)
You do the math.
THIS is what the questioner is refering to. I have done my share of expressing this concern to y/a. They do not seem concerned about the repetition and do not plan any fixes.
Voltaire said that 'common sense is not that common'. He was correct. You can blame it on the education system or whatever. There will always be that small fraction of humans who, no matter how you try to correct them with fact, will continue to believe in a flat Earth, a hollow Earth, and a fictional planet called Nibiru.
Life is sadly, or comically, like a circus. Some individuals are satisfied going through their lives like a bear riding a bicycle. Others like Ms Informed and Jess sit in the audience eating popcorn and giggling at things that stir up their primal fears and ask 'what's the harm?'. Then, while we spend our time trying to calm the children who are terrified at the snakewoman by explaining that it is all done with mirrors, the ticket-taker has pocketed his nickels and dimes and moved on to another town.
You are smart and educated. This is not something to take for granted. Those who are not as fortunate ask you to share your knowledge. Yes, it does get irritatingly redundant but they come here as a last resort for scientific truth in a medium that has become overwraught with lies and falsehoods.
I agree that it would be really great if this question could come up ONCE and be done with. Hopefully y/a will deal with this problem soon. Or dispell of the search bar completely. Perhaps it is even fitting that these questions become part of a heap of trash so deep that a person could not possibly search through the thousands of questions to find an answer.
It is logical to assume that in 2013 they will become as meaningless as the "Are there going to be two moons in August?" questions seem today. By then we will be attempting to quell the rumors of the next killer asteroid date. And we can have our laugh when the Nibiru fanatics explain why it did not show AGAIN. We can enjoy our own giggles as Nostradamus fanatics explain how they must have once again misinterpretted the quatrains. We can once again show our pity towards the gullable human race when the many authors like Patrick Geryl retire in South America on the fortunes he made selling 2012 end-of-the-world pole reversal books.
Alien and UFO questions have about as much acedemic value as "What came first- God or the Big Bang?" or "What is outside of the Universe?" questions. But clearly someone who comes onto y/a thinking that they are the first ever to ask "Do you believe in UFO's?" is not of a mature mind to begin with. Those who somehow think that the question will be resolved if we can just get enough opinions.
I also used to get irritated at these. I still get irritated at those who blame 2012 on the Mayans instead of the doomsayers living today. But it's best to remember that, sadly, not all humans are sane. Some simply use these topics to add some magic and mystery into their otherwise mundane lives. Be happy that you see things from your perspective and not theirs. All things pass.

probable no longer till late in 2012. bear in mind the Y2k crap? I truthfully have study dozens of dumb doomsday predictions. a lot of people love such nonsense. That in simple terms shows some thing with reference to the IQ of the problem-unfastened human. My sister is an imbecile. she has been interpreting non secular stuff that predicts the top of time the subsequent 2 or 3 years for 2 a protracted time i assume. She is age 37 and found out to ascertain at age 17. I truthfully have wager some people $1000 apiece that the worldwide won't end then. I made that wager on YA 4 cases at present, yet no person wager against me yet. truthfully, scientists say the Mayan calendar won't be able to be coordinated with the Gregorian one, so everybody who supplies an exact date like 12/21/12 is an ignoramus or a swindler. I asked approximately who invented this ngao si, yet no person has responded yet.

Many of these questions come from young Kids who want to know, Maybe they hear something at school and then want to ask about it or there are always doomsdayers out there trying to make a profit from scaring people with their rediculous predictions But what ever the case you always have the right to just skip over those questions and not answer them, As for me I always try to help a person and especially a child understand the things that are fact and fiction, Just skip over these questions and you will be happier if its getting you down,
Happy Holidays;

people cling to the UFO sightings because it brings hope that we are not alone in the universe it is that simple
and as for 2012 people believe in that mainly because basically everyone who has ever been considered a prophet (and alot of ancient calenders) say that that is when the world will end
so they have the "better to be safe then sorry" mentality
its really easy to understand why people do things if you look at it from a psychological point of view
it explains human behavior through and through

Many people have very little knowledge of science, so they fall for the most emotionally jarring story that they hear. What better way to make people blab, chatter, and worry then tell them they are going to die in 4 years, and that little green men and big blue men really exist.

anytime there is hub-bub going around about some catalyst event happening to us, that could potentionally wipe out human existance it gets people talking. why do others like sci-fi so much? Because it's entertaining, and interesting. Who cares what people talk about, let em' talk about what they want, if you dont like it, just dont read it. Everyone likes to know about things and are curious. Even YOU.
