How do I get him to get regular again? He had a suppository last Friday, and that was his last BM. I'd rather he went without help from that--any advice? Thanks for your help!

The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatricians both recommend that human milk (breastfeeding) is the healthiest form of nutrition for your baby.

Most experts are coming to the concensus that a minimum of one year of breastfeeding will give your child the best possible start.

Quite frankly, rice cereal, formula, juice, etc. simply is not a suitable substitute for your baby's needs.

Yes, I would relax with the cereal bc its not really anything they need yet. How much are giving him? My son is the same age and I am giving him about 3-4 small spoons a day and I just started this week with that!

Also, you can use a rectal thermometer. Just put it in his bum a lil and you will see things will get moving asap, lol!

If that does not do the trick which it should call your dr. And I am not so sure about the prunes that could really being hurting his tummy at his age.

I have a constipated baby. According to the GI specialist I took him to...AVIOD...bananas, apples, rice, berries & carrots. Things that are good for constipation...prune, apricot, pear, peach, mango, grape, plum & pineapple. (Obviously use common sense when deciding what would be good for a 5 month old. I would suggest pears first.) He also suggested I use a multigrain cereal instead of rice.

My personal opinion is that all the cereals are Iron fortified...yes babies need iron...however, too much iron causes constipation. (I don't care if no one has done the research to prove it does in infants...it causes it in adults...so any idiot should be able to figure out it does in infants as well.) It is possible that the iron in the cereal is the true culprit.

Keep using prune juice in his bottles, and switch to oatmeal. My daughter had the same problem after only a week and the pediatrician told me to skip it and use oatmeal. They only start with rice because it is the least allergenic. And if he is still constipated with oatmeal, just start on jar foods. That is what we did. And just keep up with prune juice in the bottle when needed

If the rice cereal is causing constipation, you might want to stop feeding it. His digestive system probably wasn't ready for solids yet, and cereal isn't the greatest thing anyway. Wait another month or so, and then start him on things like mashed up avocado, banana, baked sweet potatoes, etc.

being that he just started, his bm's will be off & different until he adjust, and he'll be okay unless he visably becomes uncomfortable!

but if anything, try giving him warm water in between feedings, && i dont know how much cereal you're giving him -- but if its more than one in a day, cut back for a few days until he has a bm, and mix the cereal a little thinner than normal!

..my son has been on cereal for a while, and them poos, wooooowweeee STINKY! haha. & he just started juice today, i can only imagine!! lol

good luck (:

how about stopping the rice cereal, his digestive tract really isnt ready for it, until at least 6 or 7 months old. Rice cereal is just junk carbs anyways, its kinda like kraft dinner and ichiban noodles to us. It fills us up but its not really the greatest thing to eat.

my son was never full so we put him on rice cereal when he was 3 months and then he became so constipated my dr told me to use karo syrup but i saw no effect. until i switched him to oatmeal (by pure accident). that kept him full and loosened his stool. but ask the dr before you switch and he really likes the banana flavor.

Just give him some apple juice and WATCH it loosen up his bowls...LOL...But dont give him a whole bottle of it because you definitely dont want him to have diaherra. Just give him half a bottle of it! That should do the trick!
