Well, lets compare the two characters.

Now I haven't read the Seuss book, so my knowledge of the Grinch is really based more on the classic animated special narrated by Boris Karloff (and I personally stay away from the Jim Carey live action version as I didn't care for it). But the Grinch hated Christmas, he hated it for the noise the Whos produced with their games, toys, and instruments. He hated it for their big lavish Christmas feast. And he hated it for their singing of their Christmas songs. The Whos Christmas celebrations made him miserable, so he set out to make them as miserable as he was by ruining Christmas for them.

Scrooge hated Christmas, but for different reasons. How many years did he spend all by himself in that boarding school at Christmas? It pretty clear that it was far too many. And when he could finally escape, when his sister Fanny finally came for him because their father had had a change of heart about his coming home, Scrooge's joy was not to last long as his father wasn't going to let him stay with them for too long. Scrooge was all too soon packed off to go work somewhere, loosing his sister whom he deeply cared for (though she didn't die until later in his life). At Feziwig's Christmas Party he met the love of his life in Bell, but they would later part on Christmas as his passion for money drove her away. Fanny of course died in child birth and her son Fred was a constant reminder to him of the sister he had lost, a reminder he didn't need at Christmas. Christmas itself became just another day to him, he didn't celebrate it and he didn't wish for others to celebrate it at his expense. As far as Scrooge was concerned, if he continued to work and ignore Christmas, it would go away. But when he couldn't ignore it, then he showed his displeasure for it which in turned had the affect of bringing down, if not out right ruining, the holiday for those around him.

So looking at those descriptions I'd have to say a Grinch is someone who sets out to ruin Christmas for everyone else. A Scrooge is someone who tries to ignore the holiday and does nothing to try and help others at Christmas but when they can not then their displeasure for it may in some way ruin it for others

a comparison to the difference between Scrooge and the Grinch. In the both stories, the main character starts out hating Christmas and seemingly all people. Both end up as good guys but they get there in completely different ways. Scrooge is essentially scared straight by the Ghost of Christmas Future while the Grinch is overcome with emotion by the Hoos’ ability to focus on the spirit of the holiday rather than the material trappings.

Well, the Grinch can be seen as a crooked, crooked jockey who drives a crooked horse. He's a bad banana with a greasy black peel. He's got termites in his smile. He has all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile. I wouldn't touch him with a 39 and 1/2 foot pole. He's just some old, outcast green guy who can't stand Christmas. Scrooge is basically a rich dick who doesn't care about the holiday at all. Both come around at the end of their respective stories though.

A Grinch would WANT to take away the joy of the holiday season from someone else, wile a Schrooge would not care what others did for the season, but made it clear that they disliked the holiday spirit :] which might rub off on someone else....
