It just seems so unnecessary. It's pain that a baby doesn't need to go through. The parents aren't giving that child a choice about getting her ears pierced. I just don't get it. So why do people have that done to their babies?

I'm with you on this. They say it hurts less...? How do they know? Did they take a poll of a hundred babies and 90% said it was painless??? Come on. Plus, babies are so cute on their own, they don't need accessories.
I have not pierced my girl's ears. She is 23 mos. I will wait until she asks for it. If that comes at 6 or 16, so be it. They are her ears. If and when she does decide she wants them pierced, I will make a day of it. Get her ears pierced, take her out to eat or for ice cream...something fun. (Unless of course she is a teenager and has reached THAT phase where it's not cool to hang with mom, then we'll improvise.)

getting your ears pierced doesnt hurt. Well, maybe for like a hour, but thats it. I think it should be a choice of the child. Enough said.

I know a family that had triplets. They had two boys and a girl. When the girl was 4 mos. they got her ears peirced. I think it was so other people could tell that she is a girl. But that seems vane. I would not do that to a baby. But do you think that circumcision might be more painful that peircing the ears of a baby? Food for thought.

I know! It breaks my heart seeing babies and small children scream in agony when they get pierced. I remember when I was in Kindergarten (1985) and my mom took me to her salon to get my ears pierced and it was awful! I didn't even want it done, and it hurt! (I had such a tantrum that I was only able to get one ear done...my mom self-pierced the other one which hurt even worse!) Suffice it to say my dad was furious because he always thought ear piercing was barbaric and unnecessary. I agree and when I have children of my own, they're not getting their ears pierced until they're old enough to make the choice for themselves.

I have no idea why somebody would do that to their child. It's only an opportunity for infection anyway! I have a 3 month old daughter and get asked all the time when I'm getting her ears pierced. That is one question I don't mind responding rudely to! I'm not going to put my precious little girl through that kind of pointless pain!!! She can get her ears pierced when she's old enough to decide for herself that she wants it.

It's the kind of custom that changes, and varies by culture. 80 to 90 years ago, my grandmother and her sisters all had their ears pierced in the hospital. My sisters and I had to wait 'til we were in our teens. Now I know quite a few little girls already sporting earrings while they're still in diapers.

I'm not a big fan of pushing girls to be frilly and feminine - the Disney Princess/Club Libby Lu craze sets my teeth on edge, and I guess I see dolling up your little girl with earrings and such as part of the trend.

But then, it's really not fair for me to sit back and judge ... I have a son. :)

I don't know... but man do I find it to trashy...

Unless you have a cultural reason for doing it, I think it's pretty barbaric.

But hey... it's not my kid so do as you will.

Also, I have this great memory of my mom taking me out while we were on vacation to get mine pierced (I was 10). It wasn't terrible and I had so much fun picking out earrings with my mom and feeling "grown up". If I had a little girl I would want her to have a memory like that.

I'm happy I'm having a boy and don't have to worry about it!

I disagree with the above. I let both my girls tell me when they wanted to get their ears pierced, and niether of them cried. They were 7 and 4. They both said it only hurt a little. I guess to each his or her own. I had my son circumsized and lots of people are against that.

A plus to ear piercing is that you know for sure it is a girl. I hated when people always told me how cute my little boy was even if I had my daughter dressed in pink.

I would never have a little baby's ears pierced. I have two daugthers and I am not going to let them get their ears pierced until they are 7 or 8. I was 7 when I got mine.

I dont know why either my daughters dad took her in to get her ears done when she was a baby but the place refused to as it can effect lobe development and growth thats why many places dont do it. I was glad of that my daughter will get her peirced if and when she wants to
