I am trying to sew some rabbit fur that I bought into a hoodie that I have. I also want to line some coats with the rabbit fur. Are there any special techniques for sewing with real fur?

When sewing fur in a sewing machine, use long staple polyester thread such as Gutterman or Metler and use a leather point needle. When sewing the fur on the furry side, covering the fur with tissue paper makes it easier and keeps the fur from getting tangled with the presser foot. The tissue paper can be torn away when the sewing is done. Rabbit fur isn't too dificult to sew, however it will shed excess fur. Be sure to clean your machine thouroughly when finished with the fur or it can gunk up the inner workings.

For a rabbit fur trim, here's the method used by dressmaker's. Cut the fur into strips an inch and a half wide. This will give a finished width of three quarters of an inch, then sew the shorter strips together into a longer strip. This long strip is then sewn to bias binding or a twill tape, minimum width of three quarters of an inch. Fold the strips in half so no skin is exposed and use a wide zig zag to sew the fur edges to the twill tape or binding. Then it's simply a matter of sewing the fabric to the fabric. To make a piece of fur large enough to be cut into a lining, it's best to mount the fur on a backing fabric, such as a light cotton voile. Use a fine zig zag and use the point of a needle or a dressmaker's awl to pull the fur out from the zig zags.

That would be sooo cool! I think it would be kinda tacky unless you can sew good. I could have sworn I saw something like that somewhere though...

I got a lot of hits just by googling "sewing fur"

Next time you ask the question, make sure you say it's fake fur so you don't get flamed by the Disney crowd....lol
