You might check to see if there are groups in your area, or if you have friends in the same spot, you could meet to talk about this issue. What about developing outside interests? Think about the things you thought you would do when the kids grew up and left your home.

AS a person almost in your situation my youngest is 15 and will be in college in two an a half years. But as I turn to the next phase of my life, I will find it by doing what it was I did before helping children. Find what your hobby is and see if you can expound on it. IF you like to crochet than do it for a homeless shelter to make baby blankets. IF you knit than do the same. Find a way to help those who are less fortunate than you and do what you can to help them. I Don't' care how much or how little you have there are always people who have less. I'm on disability but there are people who don't have an a apartment and food to eat every day. I have children who know that they have a mother who loves them dearly there are children who need adults to mentor and care for them. IF working with children aren't your thing than work with adults, work at a woman's shelter or a food bank. Check with you local library and see if they have a program to help adults who are illiterate. NYC does than sign up and help someone better their life by learning to read. Other towns and city may also. Help someone learn English or tutor someone in math so that they can graduate high school. There are alot of needs out there if you're in a postion to have some extra time ( if you don't work out side of the house) than you can find someone or an organzation that needs someone to help. Who knows it might lead to a second career.

I've been an empty nester for about 10 years. It was and still is difficult so I do empathize.

But your question requires God. Purpose requires a plan and a plan for our life requires a Planner.

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (mathematician, philosopher and Nobel laureate)

If we admit that God exists, then we can see that He must have put our intense need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him. And so seeking our Creator is our purpose.

If we reject God, then we have no real purpose, but we need to at least have the feeling of having purpose even if we don't have the reality. So we invent "reasons for living", attach great importance to our invention and delude ourselves into the idea that our invention is what we "are really here for". It is an exercise in self deception.

I keep seeing questions about "What is my life's purpose" Here is the answer. Everyones' life purpose is one thing,To live life. Thats right just go out and live life to the fullest. That is the whole purpose behind living. Experiencing new things, conquering old fears. learning a new language, watching the sun set or rise, There is no great mystery in it. You don't have to search for it. If we all stopped worrying about what our purpose is and went out and actually lived we would be a lot happier, There is no one thing that we are meant to accomplish. It is all of the little things that we do accomplish by living everyday that make up our lives. That make us the people that we are. So go out and live. Have fun!
