I love his voice and I think he is one of the few singers, that I can honestly say, everything he sings is so very good.

When you buy his Cd's, you get your moneys worth, because they are all favorites.

I was lucky and met him once. He was traveling through town, in about 1953 and stopped at my Aunt's grocery store and gas station. I waited on him and got so nervous, that I gave him too much change back and he corrected me and gave me back the extra change. I was about 17 at the time and I was tongue tied, trying to talk to him. He had a beautiful suit on.

"Chances Are", came to my mind right away. Tho I know he
has sung so many wonderful songs. He's the best 'crooner'
I think of all time. He can set the mood for many a romantic
evening, that's for sure. I've always loved his singing, so
smoothe and mellow.
I wonder who will be a crooner of the kids generation today? Much less could they find someone who enunciates
well enough to understand what they're saying. That's always
been an important factor for me. I need to know what the
singer is saying. That's as important as the melody. To me
anyway. With Johnny, you can depend on it.

There were so many good Johnny Mathis tunes but his rendition of "Old Cape Cod" was the first we ever heard from him.

Chances Are, favorite, but I do like anything he recorded. I had a 45 of chances are, and wore it out and played it over and over and it turned white. hehe If I had to pick just two, it would be Chances Are and Twelfth of Never.

We just put it away for another year. Many years ago, Mel Torme was in Chicago just before Christmas visiting the elderly in a nursing home. Unfortunately, two older gentlemen were playing chess in the lobby when fire broke out. They were so engrossed in their game, they failed to notice the flames engulfing the area.. They continued to play as the blaze consumed the entire lobby including the ceiling above them.. Mel was so-o-o-o taken by the scene, that he sat down and composed on the spot what has become one of our greatest seasonal pieces, the Christmas Song. He began it with "Chess nuts roasting on an open foyer."

I can pick just one and IT stands head & shoulder above all the others in my mind. Of course that just might be because of the memories (non discuss-able) that it invokes.

The song, Misty.
