i live in a guesthouse behind the main house. we had cable, but we had to pay for service inside the house and the guesthouse. we switched to dsl and now pay for just one service inside the house. we set up the wireless router in the main house and my laptop picks up the signal, but its fairly weak. how can i increase the signal to my laptop? i'm not good with electronics so can someone recommend a good signal booster/antennae/wireless router that can help?

Get a booster. Make sure it will cover the distance you want - but should since you already get a weak signal. Check out http://www.tigerdirect.com (they have great info files for components to help you understand them) or http://www.pcworld.com for info and brands. There are many to choose from.

First start with the router itself. Buy a pre-n router , which gives you wider range. If possible, get one with two radios (both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

If that's not an option, see if you can run an ethernet cable from the main house to the guesthouse.

There are antenna boosters for laptops, but they do require special wireless adaptor cards

Finally, you may want to consider powerline adaptors (available from linksys, netgears and others) which allow you to access your router via the power lines in your home.

The first step would be to get a usb or pcmcia wifi card and attach an external antenna.

In addition you could setup a Wireless Access Point in the window facing the guest house. Shortening the distance and cutting down on the physical barriers between you and the signal.

You'll find that its not that easy and you can end up spending a lot.
