Political assassinations have been a staple of Pakistani politics for decades.
Somebody simply got lucky.
Re: UN sanctions -- what good would that do? There are religious fundamentalists with much bigger incentives to assassinate a Western-educated female than Pakistan's current President.
Miss Bhutto had been legally elected to lead Pakistan -- twice. Twice, she got run off for not being able to control the corruption within her own party. Given that track record, her odds for another election may not have been that good.
Her assassination will have a slowing effect on Pakistan's 'Westernization' and modernization.
Now... who benefits? Look there.

That's naive and ridiculous. The militant Islamists that support the terror groups in the NW along the Afghanistan border are to blame. Bhutto had promised to go into that region and vigorously weed out and fight terror groups and change the region. This is a very dangerous hour for Pakistan, and in turn the US. If Islamic fundamentalists take power in a coup or in another fashion, the stockpiles of fusible material could be compromised. Pakistan has a very large amount of material, which by itself, could be used to make many "dirty bombs". If they get their hands on that, you can be sure they will attempt to detonate devices in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, ect. They would eventually get to the US. not long after that. Watch carefully the ensuing reaction within the nation. A military coup is possible, or a factional military coup, that propels the fundamentalists into power. Now is the time that Mussarif should be supported and he had better watch his back.

No the UN can not impose sanctions for acts of terrorism. The terrorism in Pakistan successfully uprooted the other candidate. This is the desired effects of terrorism, place terror in the hearts of those who oppose them.
Our terror would begin here in the USA if the terrorists factions actually did get the Nukes in Pakistan. Just one more reason the middle east should not have nuclear.

Since the head of the other party running is boycotting the election Musharaaf's win will be in name only.
This is a tragedy. Bhutto had faults but she was certainly more moderate than most of the other leaders in that corner of the world.

So what you are trying to say is that the U N should impose sanctions because of the act of terrorism. Since when did the U N actually start to do something about terrorism.
