Serious depression can be a medical condition that often is hereditary, and may require a doctors prescription.
Depression can come out of loneliness, fear, a lack of confidence in one's self, poverty...so many different demons. It's how we deal with it, that either saves us or destroys us.
I get depressed too. I live alone, am not close to family, don't have a lot of friends because I feel most people can't be trusted. So I often have to keep myself entertained. Fortunatley I have a good job, so I know I can support myself. But money isn't everything, when you are lonely or down.
I fight my bouts of depression by going to the gym almost every day after work, (exercise is so good for the mind and body), working in my garden, and answering questions on this site when I'm in the mood or don't have a lot to do.
You have to fight it, or it will consume you.
Find things you enjoy doing to keep your mind active. Avoid angry or mean people that will only bring you down. Be around positive people with goals in life. That's my best advice to you. And always seek help when you feel you need it.

Depression is not just a state of mind. Depression can also be physically painful or debilitating. Yes you can cure depression or learn to cope with it with other means besides medication. You can seek out therapists, both one on one and in groups. You can learn the signs of depression. You can work on the things that make you depressed. Medication is not a cure all. If you take medication but do not take the steps to correct what ever it is that is depressing you the medication is not going to do you any good at all.

Depression is a chemical imbalance in your'e brain causing you to stress! This imbalance is triggered by events. Wether it be the tinyest thing like homework or a death. Depression can be mild in some cases but in others different. No matter what has triggered. Depression can always be treated what ever type it shall be. In some cases depression can be treated without medicaion in others not, it tottaly depends on the personality. Drugs are precribed only to keep the persons well being. The brain will eventually work its self out could take a day or 10 years

Depression for cause is, indeed, a state of mind. I was very badly depressed when my mother descended through the stages of Alzheimer's Disease and I was her only caregiver. I was depressed and needed therapy. Not ONCE did I ever take a pill for depression because my problem was not organic. It was situational. Once Mom passed away and I went through my grieving process, I snapped out of the depression. Wasn't easy; took 9 months (August to May) and more than a little bit of therapy. But I'm still here.
However, there are those persons who get depressed for no good external reason. In such persons, it is possible that some form of medication would be required to restore some sense of normalcy.

No, it's not "all in your head". Depression is more than just a state of mind. Many times, a person suffering from depression has little to no enjoyment and often feels fatigued or at least run down.
It's not a matter of 'prevention' with meds, but 'management'. The real way to handle depression in my experience is to release all that pent up anger and guilt. Direct those feelings outward. Do NOT keep them bottled up. It stifles the soul.
As always: if you're on meds, do not stop taking them unless your doctor decides you no longer require them.

Depression is completely a state of mind. It can be the result of injury, of misprogramming (such as thinking things that depress you), because of seasonal environmental considerations (the Christmas holiday and winter increase depressive thoughts) or can be a result of chemical imbalances.
For some people, they can "snap themselves out of it" and fix the problem. For others - especially if their depression is a result of chemical imbalance - it may not be possible to fix the problem without medication. Or it may be possible to change the diet in order to get some changes from what one eats without requiring the use of pharmaceuticals.

yes and no. It's the brains chemical interaction with external environmental stresses.
Either by negative experience or genetic disposition, the same physiological processes in the brain are present in a depressed person.
Depends on the severity, environment or genetic disposition of the individual.
I do believe one should exhaust all natural remedies before resorting to medication. But medication, if used on a temporary bases, can prevent lots of negative learned behavior.

I think there is some genetic propensity for depression.
However we really create the depression by our own negative thinking. What I mean is some people "enjoy" being depressed and attach or idolize other depressed people such as entertainers, musicians etc. Our depression gives us some eccentricities to make ourselves different, cool, moody, artistic and so on.
It is selfish to be depress as it effects those around us and instead of being outgoing and loving others we turn inward and dwell on our problems.
I have benefited greatly from antidepressant drugs. At the least it gives you the opportunity to be happy and reflect on our own behavior. Therapy also works if you are really lost within yourself.
It is nice to be happy and to love others. It is all up to you to change. Only you can make the decision, ask for help and change. It is all up to you, no one else. You have created your own situation.

It depends. Some people are depressed because of chemical imbalances in thier brain, and others are depressed because something sad happened to them such as losing a family member or getting dumped.
No, one can not get rid of depression on thier own without medication if there are chemical imbalances thier bran, but one can if they are depressed because of something bad happening to them.
