I have dreams off and on about my exboyfriend assaulting, molesting, and trying to rape me, and sometimes succeeding. I also have violent (thought not sexual) dreams where my father (divorced parents, i was 11) is fighting with me and holding me back and not letting me leave.

Why do I keep having these dreams? It is very hard for me to deal with. Does anyone out there have similar dreams or know why I have these dreams and how to deal with them?

Thank you very much.

i think our dreams are ways of telling us whats wrong or whats going on in our lives. the dream of the ex boyfriend assaulting you and doing horrible things to you shows you feel violated by him, maybe something that happened in the relationship jeopardized your self confidence, and esteem. the dreams about your dad holding you back is probably what he is doing in your life, maybe he wants you to do something other than what you want and you feel he is holding you back such as a school or job choice.

I have read the other responses and yes, dreams can be associated with real life thoughts or experiences you might be having. HOWEVER, changes in diet, sleep patterns, or other major life changes (like a break up from an ex boyfriend) can also trigger unusual and outlandish dreams. The resentment you feel towards your ex could also be the reason for the dreams about your dad considering your parents got divorced. These were probably two very significant break ups that affected your life greatly.

But I would also advise that you go to a counselor or psychologist about these problems because you never know if it could be a deeper problem.

Dreaming is simply a way to voice our unspoken fears, triumphs, accomplishments or defeats. I don't know the situation between you and your exboyfriend. Did something violent occur during the relationship? Did you do something that you think you need to be punished for. (ie cheating etc) As for the Father dream. You could be reversing your roles with your Father. When your parents seperated you had to be upset about your Father leaving. In your dreams instead of you begging your father not to go you have switched it around where your Father is now the one holding you back from leaving. It is a way for you to take control of a situation that you felt you had no control over.

With dream interpretation, the key issue always is how did you FEEL when you were dreaming these things. I assume the dreams were upsetting. But the nuances are important: Was it fear, anger, grave danger, etc., that you felt? If I knew the flavor of the angst, I could give you a better interpretation. I general I can tell you that dreams are the mind's way of solving the problems that your mind is exposed to while you are awake. Even though you may not like your dreams, your mind is working on solutions on how to cope. Sleep is very important, and it is believed that dreams, whether they be good dreams or nightmares, are important too.

I often have dreams where I'm fighting (verbally) with my mother or father and it gets so intense that I actually wake up shouting obscenities.

Sounds like you might be afraid of your ex-boyfriend, but nobody can really answer this question without knowing more about your relationship with your ex.

I'm also curious if you were ever actually sexually assaulted as a child or as an adult.

Dreams are just that - dreams. They are the stuff that you make up in your mind, and no one can tell you on a casual basis why you dreamed that dream.

Your psycological makeup has a lot to do with the kinds of dreams you come up with, and none of here at Yahoo! Answers is qualified to do a psycological profile of you with the little information we have about you.

If you feel that the dreams are harmful, or are making your life difficult, it would be a good idea to speak with a counselor or psychologist about them. They may (and probably will) turn out to be nothing more than one too many slices of pepperoni pizza, but at least you'd know the answer.

Good luck.

Not sure exactly why. If there are personal reasons to it, only you would know.

Otherwise it could be as simple as the music you hear or movies you watch. Even little things like aggressive music or violence in a movie could leak into your dreams.

Most crime shows deal with rape and assualt so its easy for that to be on your mind. I'd just monitor the little things that influence your mood.

I remember if I listened to too much Dru Hill or R&B music, i'd have dreams that my Girlfriend was cheating on me. Even simple mood changes can find their way into your dreams.

My friend, I would not presume to give an answer on such a serious topic. It sounds to me like you should talk to a professional counsellor. Nothing bad about that. A lot of people do. God bless you.
