when your parents let you leave the house by yourself?

My parents didn't let me leave the house without them, or another responsible adult, until I was sixteen years old. I thought they were pretty ridiculous at the time, but now that I'm almost 30 years old, and I look around at friends whose parents let them go off and do whatever they wanted at a young age, as well as friends whose parents had somewhat stricter rules...and I can see those of us with parents who didn't let us do whatever we wanted whenever we wanted have successful marriages, didn't end up with teenage pregnancies, and didn't end up promiscuous. The same can't be said of my friends who were allowed to start going out alone when they were twelve or thirteen.

It all comes down to what you can and cannot handle. Even if you THINK you can handle that much freedom as a young teenager, in all honesty, you are not emotionally or psychologically mature enough. When you're thirteen, it's harder to see that; when you're 29, it's easy to see.
