There's no clear holder of this title. The list above by ck1 is a pretty good list of some major contenders. However, she has included a few who probably shouldn't be there. She also excluded some who should. The most obvious omissions:

William Faulkner
F Scott Fitzgerald
Henry James

I would add two more who would be less unanimous choices for a list of the greatest American novelists, Thomas Wolfe and Philip Roth.

If I were forced down to one name, I'd say Faulkner was the greatest, but Twain is easier and more fun to read.

That's very subjective. I don't know of any one author who is considered the best by everyone.

I'd include:
-Margaret Mitchell
-Louisa May Alcott
-Edgar Allan Poe
-Jack London
-Mark Twain
-O. Henry
-Washington Irving
-Nathaniel Hawthorne
-Herman Melville (I agree)
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
-Frances Hodgson Burnett (born in England but became an American citizen)
-Ernest Hemingway
-Henry James

These are just some of the greatest American writers of fiction classics....

Oh, there have been so many great ones, it's hard to pick just one! I'd say Isaac Asimov and Mark Twain are high up on the list.

Most versatile and most prolific, the title goes to Isaac Asimov (born in Russia, by the way).
