Very interesting Question my Grandfather loved to work on clocks and his House was full of them, he collected all kinds. I am actually a fan of clocks myself and have all kinds.
I have 11 to be exact. There a lot of them that are very old and have to be wound by hand.
I to evidently inherited the ability to work on them also. I can fix them and have no idea how I know what I know. I guess it's because I use to take them apart when I was little and tinker with them all the time, if I could sneak one off that wasn't working, I'd get it working.lol
