At ten years old, I think that she is old enough to know that the NAZIS were evil people who systematically murdered over six million Jewish people because the NAZIS wanted to kill all of the Jewish people.

I think that it is safe to tell a ten year old that the NAZIS rounded up all of the Jewish people that they could find and put them in prison camps.

Once the Jewish people were confined in prison camps the NAZIS systematically murdered them because they were Jewish and the NAZIS wanted to kill all Jewish people.

If she gets the political party thing, like democratic/republican, start by explaining that in other countries, there are other parties, and that Nazi is short for the Nationalist Socialist party (in German), and then take it from there. Be gentle about it, don't go into too much detail, but say something like: they had some leaders that did ... touch on Hitler, etc.

You should definitely explain that the party still exists in some countries and has different goals (mostly) than it did, and that there are "neo-nazis" and maybe touch on skinheads, etc., but, of course, if she starts to glaze over, you've gone too far.

You might start with what has she heard? and why is she asking this question. Did someone use the word in school as a racial epithet? (Wouldn't that be ironic?)

I wouldn't go into any detail on the death camps or anything, just say that they wanted to kill off all the people who weren't like what they wanted the world to be, and then say how boring the world would be if everyone were blond-haired and blue-eyed and there were no variety.

It's not a good idea to tell her she'll "find out eventually." I would have hated being told that at 10!

It was a political movement in Europe in the late 1920s through 1940s in which a man named Hitler was "elected" (the election was rigged) by the German people. Essentially the party was prejudiced against anyone who was different; they targeted gays, blacks, people who were mentally and physically handicapped, and Jews, among others.

I know this is a lot for a child to process, but you need to give her a basis to start her off. As she gets older she should be able to learn about all of World War II in school and so on.

Well, I think you have to give a 10 year old the short version.
Explain that after Germany lost World War I their country had a lot of problems and the people were very unhappy. The Nazi's promised to help the people. Unfortunately, they decided to do this by take away other people's land, houses and property and killed many people along the way.

Nazi were a party that was based on the Japanese Bushido code, in that they believed they were the chosen race.

Fascism and and form of Nationalism can lead a country down this dangerous path.

As far as what is happening in the world today there are many similarities to what happened in the mid 1930's

Tell your sister that in times of economic depression and political upheavals the Germans have historically looked for strong leadership, even if it meant giving up personal freedoms.

Nazis were the members of the political movement headed by Adolf Hitler. They believed in an old legend that the citizens of Atlantis were "gods", and that in order to reachieve this immortals walking the earth, they needed to breed the "superior" race. The people of Atlantis were described as being blonde haired and blue eyed, and that was what he was trying to achieve the superior race of beings that he would lead, and conquer the world. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? But unfortunately it is all true.

The Nazis believed that the Jews were "evil" and were out to circumvent their plan of world domination. That was why they were exterminating them.

What I would suggest is googling Nazi and find out what you get. There is so much, and it might be too much info for your sister. But having it handy might help you explain things, and answer any questions she might ask after getting the info you give her.

Tell her that you need more information ... why she is asking this question being the first and biggest question you need to ask. Then, give her an 'age appropriate answer' to the question ... she may not want to know what a Nazi was during WWII, but what a 'neo-Nazi' is today, or she may have just heard the word used about someone and be wondering what that word means. Use your good judgement, and answer her question according to her age.

At 10 years old, I had a very good understanding of what Nazis were. She's not too young to understand or know.

Give her a book or find some appropriate sites on the Internet for her to read and then discuss it with her.

I don't find her curiosity so funny or unusual.

i loved learing about this subject (no i don't like the nazi's, i just found it very interseting) and this is how you can explain it to her: Well, Aldoph Hilter was a very mean leader of countries. He only liked people with blonde hair, blue eyes. If you didn't have blonde hair or blue eyes, and were Jewish, then he would send bad people out to get you. After you would be in something called "consentration camps." I know this sounds mean but it really happened, and it is all over now, so don't worry about it! When you went to the consentration camps, they would put you in gas chambers. If you didn't die then, they he would put you in an oven... no lie. So I hope this helped! I promise you can trust me, I listened in history very well!
