I'm planning of attending CSULA, and I've never been to that area. From what I found out from websites, it doesn't look like friendly neighborhood to live, and I'm thinking of renting an apartment. Is it safe to walk around in the evening? Any big grocery stores nearby?
If living near campus is not recommened, what's my other option besides dorms? (I won't have my car for a year or so)
Thanks

I'm not sure I would choose to live around the campus. Consider areas like Pasadena or South Pasadena, perhaps something like Glendale; they aren't far away, and the areas are better if you aren't familar with the area.

Alhambra is a lot closer than Pasadena. It's only a couple miles away east adjacent to CSULA and it's a middle class suburb and a pretty good area with all the shops and stores you need. It is predominantly Asian, Hispanic and White middle class. The bad area you're talking about is on the southwest side which are the neighborhoods of East L.A. and City Terrace ( a lot of gangs). Students don't really venture that direction too much anyway.

If you don't mind driving the 6 - 7 miles extra and can afford it, Pasadena and Glendale are excellent choices and much better and more interesting cities than Alhambra. Do a mapquest or google search of Alhambra or these other cities and it'll give you an idea where they are.
