I just turned 18 and have had my learners permit for over a year. I have made an effort to get the state required 40 hours of behind the wheel time with an adult driver and only have about 4 hours. Every time I ask my parents to let me drive so I can get some hours they either get an attitude with me or tell me no. Most of the time I go out it is with my mom, and she always says that she doesn’t ride with "rookies" and to ask my dad, but when I ask him he is always doing something or doesn’t have the time. I am starting to get fed up with this situation because lots of people that got their learners permits after I did have their licenses’ and cars while I have neither, and most of the time when I need a ride home from school I have to bum one off them. My parents keep telling me that driving is a major responsibility and I understand that. I would never play around with a car. Does anyone have any ideas about how I should approach this situation?

Whatever you do, don't take their car without their permission to take your drivers test. My sister was an idiot and did that. Got busted quick.
Still no license and now into drugs and dope.

I'm not sure about your state, but most states allow those with a driver's permit to practice driving with any 21-year old responsible adult in the front seat. Maybe you should talk to your parents about allowing you to practice driving with another adult, perhaps the parent of a friend or an aunt or uncle.
I suggest you try to get in at least 20 hours before getting your license, the practice really helps. When the time comes to convince your parents to let you get your license, explain to them how important it is. Tell them how you feel about always having to bum rides off of friends and explain how much easier your parents' lives would be if they had you do help out with the grocery shopping and such.
Good luck!

You are 18, so get a job of some kind, even if you have to be uncool and ride a bike or take the bus to it, earn some money, and buy driving lessons with a driving school. That will give you the required time behind the wheel. Then keep the job after you get a license and use it to save for a car.

Make a list of reasons why you should be able to drive (responsible, grown up, ect.) and try not to sound like a little kid. Don't beg. Slip the note on top of your parent's bed before they go to sleep. Don't tell them about it. In the morning, wait by the car and when your mom is going to the store or anywhere, open the door and say, "I'm driving". You have to be in demand while showing respect. Don't let them be in control anymore. Just show her that you're up to it, and the way back, try to "accidentally" pass by the car dealer. Tell her, "What do ya say, mom? Can I finally get my liscense?" and smile. See what she says. If it's no, remind her of the list. if she didn't read it, tell her about it. Good luck! :)

Wow, How do your parents expect you to become an independent adult if they don`t teach you to fly, so to speak. I started teaching my son to drive at age 11 so by the time he was old enough to go to drivers ed, he`d be ahead.
He`s now 16 and a super driver and he can drive alone till midnight. Your parents must not think to much of their parenting skills to think you don`t know what being a responsible driver means. I`d ask them if they plan to support you till they die or something since they don`t want to teach you how to be self reliance.

you need a permit at 18? what state are you in. i imagine you can just go to the dmv at 18. im quite positive. call the dmv.
but to anser your question, good grades, good attitude, demonstrate ability to be responsible, chores, constant begging, and eating all your vegetables if memory serves me.
do you have older siblings? your parents sound very unsupportive. at this rate, driving the family car will be the least of your worries.
