Quite a few,however, three pairs would make a peaceful community I'm afraid that any more might result in territorial squabbling,and maybe even mayhem. Substituting a pair of Jewel Cichlids for one of the Firemouth pairs might reduce tensions also. Some Kribensis (Pelvichromis sp.) might fit in, too. The problem is that all of these fishes occupy the bottom area of the tank,and you will probably want something to add a little activity to the middle and upper parts of the water column to make the tank appear fuller. All of these fish are African river dwellers and have been somewhat neglected since the Rift Lake species came into popularity and I'm glad to see some rekindled interest in some fine pets. attempt watching urau cichlids, they're alittle super, yet they are going to be ok in a fifty 5 gallon, nicely considered one of them besides. yet for aggressive firemouths you're able to look at convict cichlids, or chocolate cichlids

i wouldnt put more than 3... two if you get male n female. i would get 3 or 4 females..
