Try "Learn Japanese" textbooks. They're pretty user friendly. Also if you want to learn to write you should grab "A Guide to Reading and Writing Japanese." This one has the top 2000 Kanji characters you should know. Try looking for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) web site for more information and study materials. Also try reading some manga in Japanese to improve your reading skills and comprehension. Japanese movies are good to watch as well. Not the old samurai movies as they use a somewhat archaic Japanese. Look for newer movies and you can watch anime too although anime doesn't always give you a really good basis for the language. A lot of the stuff you hear in many anime are rude to be saying when speaking good Japanese. You should also try to find someone to verbally communicate in Japanese with. This is very important if you want to attain proper pronunciation.

Japanese for Busy People workbook. A bit boring but VERY useful.
I'd also get a japanese phrase book and memorise phrases. Also get a dictionary and learn new vocabulary. Then use your vocabulary in phrases.
Then i'd watch some anime and you'll pick up heaps.
My fave anime is Tantei Gakuen Q (can be watched on youtube)
There are also some good Japanese lessons on YouTube. Try katexgg and bzc136, gimmeabreakman.
That's about it.
Listen to Japanese music even.
Mix studying with things like anime, it'll ensure you don't get heaps bored.

It's good way to translate what you want to know from Japanese to English.
I'm Japanese and I like watching NBA, NFL and MLB.I'm learning English because I want to know what players are saying.
What do you like?Anime?Japanese songs? Japanese books? I think it's important to reconfirm what you want to know. It's not difficult. If you like Anime, translate them. You should start with easy nouns and find good dictionary sites.

You should take classes. That way somebody can teach you the right way and you can practice with other people.
If possible, buy CD's of Japanese music or DVD's Japanese TV programs (doesn't matter which) so you can get the familiar with the language.

Sure fire way. Get a Japanese boyfriend. Honest. I used to teach ESL and a lot of the girls who had American boyfriends improved almost immediately.
