Well as an OLDER TECH, the one rule I have learned in all my years and all my experience. IF IT AIN"T BROKE DON'T FIX IT.
Second line, "if it ain't broke and you fix it, it will be broke!"
That's the way we talk here in Texas!

So unless there is some reason NO DONT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE!

Added: unlike computer software, router firmware very rarely has anything to do with security, viruses, or trojans it has more to do with compatibility so unless you have a drop out, packet loss, etc type of problem, and upgrade simply isn't needed. You can always read the reasons given with the firmware to see what they "fixed".

As a professional working in IT, I prefer to apply all updates and patches as soon as they are released. There are reasons for why updates are released. The most important reason is to fix security holes. As you probably know, new viruses and worms are created everyday and a majority of these are to exploit security vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is important that you keep any piece of software up-to-date.

Having said that, many people prefer to leave it alone because certain upgrades and patches are troublesome and the process could be time consuming. Some upgrades and patches are also known to cause more problems to the system.

It purely depends on your needs. If you are running some kind of highly secure network and you worry about people breaking in then yes, you should upgrade your firmware. If you are just using a router at home to surf the Internet, then you probably don't need to bother.

A good rule to follow as far as firmware goes....."If it aint broke dont fix it", unless there is new features you want that come with the upgrade.

You can use your laptop, but use an Ethernet connection to the router, rather than wireless.
