oh right - radiohead, talking heads, david bowie... pretty sure they all went to art school (bowie studied to be a mime for a while, too). emily haines from metric studied; so did feist; the shins; god, most good bands got together at college. sting was a teacher.
just a tip, by the way - if you're in your first round of university, and you're already mourning lost youth, act now. do whatever it is you need to do, because time passes anyway. you can be older, and at least know that you've tried, or just older. you don't need permission to make music.
you will regret not doing it. you will regret having compromised.
these are cliches that i know well, because i didn't act, and am making up for it now, in my early thirties.
ps - it's not all looks etc. fine for bands made out of tv talent shows or whatever. (incidentally, have you noticed that the age maximum on lots of those shows has been raised?).
there's also myspace, last.fm, pandora... lots of ways to get your stuff out there. lots of audiences.
don't be afraid.

I am a Virgo and all my past relationships were with Geminis, many of my acquaintances are Geminis and my best friend is a Gemini. I do know why I am drawn to them though, as well as why they are drawn to me. There is always something to talk about and we stimulate one another's intellect. I don't do well in relationships with them, though, because they do not like they I can be off on my own and it seems like I am always criticizing them. They tend to create alot of chaos and difficulty in their lives and don't want to deal with it. The friendships last longer because we accept and respect one another differences. It never turned out that way in the relationships. Recently I have found I am drawn to Aquarians. Although they share the devil may care attitude the Geminis have, they seem to be more focused and direct about things. Even though they can be infuriating with their opinions and wanting to debate any and everything, they also have you thinking about things and looking at life in a different perspective. I admire their humanitarian nature, their independence and how unselfish they are. I share these qualities as well, but not to their extent. They don't seem to have many inhibitions, which intrigues me because I am a planner and an organizer. The thing that I love the most about them is as upsetting and frustrating as they can make you become, you will just love them all the more.

Nappy Roots.
they couldn't get a record deal, so they all went to college and got degrees. after they graduated they started their own record label. then they released their album, which actually did very well. i believe it went platinum or gold, or something. they had videos on MTV and joined large tours.
they signed other [unknown] artist that too where unable to get record deals with other labels . . many ended up being very successful as well.
