The average lifespan is about 7 or 8 years but I've known some people who had ferrets who lived to be 11 or 12, and I've even heard of a few that lived to be 14 or 15. They have the potentional to live as long as a cat or a dog, they just tend to be prone to cancer so their life expectancies are a bit shorter. But good care, including good vet care, can make a good difference.

In Europe their ferrets are all from the hunting stock so they live to about 15 years old, but in Canada and the US we get our pet ferrets from the former fur trade, which bred for good coats but only was interested in 1-4 year old animals. The genetics for our ferrets are messed up so lifespans are averaging 5-8 years with a 10 year old ferret as being really ancient.
