Ancient philosophers as well as modern philosophers and religious teachers have tended to link happiness with other aspects of human existence such as virtue (Plato) or pleasure (hedonism/utilitarianism) or wisdom (Cicero) or relationships (Oprah!). Some have defined it as an absence of tension or suffering (Buddhism).
Aristotle called happiness 'eudaimonia' which means literally “flourishing” and he said it was the chief good or aim of man. For Aristotle truth was at the core of happiness as well as beauty and meaning. This is why most ancient Greek thinkers believed that philosophy was the highest pursuit of life. Cicero said that philosophy was the medicine of the soul.
Jesus Christ of Nazareth had a manifesto on happiness better known as the beatitudes and those are captured in his famous Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. The Sermon on the Mount may be the most influential commentary on happiness and philosophy in the western world.
Some thinkers such as J.P. Sartre have stated that their is no fixed meaning to life, therefore happiness or any temporal pursuit cannot be universally found in any specific aspect of life. In his classic philosophy text entitled, “Being and Nothingness,” Sartre concluded:
“It amounts to the same thing whether one gets drunk alone or is a leader of nations.” This philosophy of happiness or life would be labeled nihilism or fatalism.
A recent popular book by Daniel Gilbert from Harvard is titled "Stumbling Upon Happiness." You might want to read that one.

Happiness is not one thing - it means different things to different people and this changes at different stages of life. It is therefore somewhat futile to try and 'define' happiness - what you can do is make the right choices in life, the right choices for you at the stage of life you are at, and experience increased happiness. Two important components of happiness are contentment and lack of fear - the closest 'definition' would be 'connecting with the part of you that generates a feeling of contentment and eliminates fear'.

The absence of pain and fatal illness. Everything else is peanuts and unhappiness just an illusory, (often) relative perspective. Happiness can't exist if you do not (particularly, physically and emotionally). If you're alive and have a chance of waking up tomorrow, at least choice and opportunity is on your side.

Happiness is...
An ice-cream on a hot summers day.
A warm hug from someone you love.
Being able to sleep in without having to rush anywhere.
Watching my daughter rip into her Christmas Presents.
The feeling a job done better than well-done.
The joy of good friends.
Happiness cannot be defined, and it doesn't need to be.

It is that illusion which affects you for about 40% of your life on earth. The illusion increases when you get some love, clear up debt, give out some love, confess and/or when you are not hungry/cold or at war.
It has nothing much to do with having money, cars or beautiful houses.
