yes. 1. raise water level to the filter output so it reduces splashing as well as making lots of noises. due to evaporation it will lower daily. 2. take care of your filter properly. i currently am using a 10gal HOB filter on my 53gal tank i had this filter for over 5 years now and it's running good but from time to time makes loud buzzing noises which i need to fix. its just because the filter is old and i usually don't clean it often maybe once a month or less. 3. if you do want an air pump simply put an air stone in it and also get one thats lower then the amount you need. the bigger the bubblers the louder they pop. they do sell wooden air stones that create microbubbles and it just looks ridiculous but cool. other then that an aquarium really shouldn't be so loud.i have myt aquarium right next to my bed and have no trouble sleeping unless the filter is buzzing then i usually just fix it which only takes 5 seconds. of course im going to replace the filter soon with an appropriate sized one when i get the money

I have to agree with the above-canisters are by far the quietest type of filter in my experience & a 55 gallon is certainly a size worthy of a canister, I have 2 Eheim 2026s running a 40 gallon long & I don't notice them even in the dead of night when all is silent.

If you really want a qiet filter, you will either want an internal filter like a Cascade internal filter (or any other brand) or a canister... Fluval 204s are silent and only run a little over $115... Honestly, silence costs money.

HOB hang on the back filters can be quiet if you have the water filled up to the top so that there's no waterfall noise.
PetSmart has a Topfin brand that's really cheap. Although the filters aren't the best, they do come with a lifetime guarantee, so when they break you can get them replaced.

well i have a tetra whisper filter and its really queit. but its for a small 5 gallon tank. I would not put a 55 gallon tank in my bedroom. thats kind of big and the filter has to be bigger for a bigger tank and the bigger the filter the more noise it will potentially produce.
