Shriners are an organization of men. All members are by invitation only and are required to accept an unknown vow.
What do they do? They use the money they collect and the resources they've made to help people. We have a niece that couldn't be seen quickly enough by a special hospital for a birth defect. Money was preventing several options. The Shriners found out and made a few phone calls. All expenses paid and an appt. with the Shriner's Hospital in Louisiana the next day. No costs no matter what the outcome was.
I don't know who the members are or how they operate but they helped us without asking for anything in return. I hope some day we can return the favor for someone else. If my son becomes one, I will think of it as a positive thing.

The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, also commonly known as Shriners and abbreviated A.A.O.N.M.S., established in 1870, is an appendant body to Freemasonry. In 2010, the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, as well as Shriners North America, changed its name to Shriners International, now covering nearly 200 temples (chapters) across North America, South America, Europe and Southeast Asia.[1] The organization is best known for the Shriners Hospitals for Children it administers, and the red fezzes that members wear. The organization is headquartered in Tampa, Florida.[2] Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. There are approximately 340,000 members from 195 temples (chapters) in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, the Republic of Panama, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Europe and Australia

Shriners are a concordant body of Freemasons. Essentially this means once you join a Lodge you can go on to become a Shriner. This group actively raises money for their children's burn hospitals where the only cash registers are in the cafeteria and gift shop.

It's a group of folk's that like to network. They do it in private and are also referred to as "Free Masons". "Shriners" are members that have achieved higher degrees in the "Masonic Order".

Nothing more than a bunch of do-gooders with a positive attitude that likes to help the less fortunate. Makes you sort of sick, doesn't it?
Sort of like the Salvation Army that hasn't won a war for us yet.
But they do have those cool little motorcycles that the kids like.

They are a charitable group that runs fund raisers to support hospitals (particularly burn centers and Children's hospitals).
I think they are an offshoot from Masons.
