when i had the ipod plugged in i was updating my itunes then a screen popped up saying it couldnt read from the ipod anymore. I looked at the ipod and the screen was white. I ended up unplugging it and i think it died. when i went to plug it back into my computer my computer didnt even know anything was plugged into the USB port. I tried restarting it and nothing happen. I the ipod is new and I am using Vista

I have 2 USB ports and i tried both and they both dont work and i have plugged it in and unplugged a few times and nothing...... i have always tried to restart and it didnt work

Just keep trying to restart it and plug it in a bunch of times.that happened to me and it turned on the second time.

Here are some ideas:
Try a different usb port
Do not run other programs while syncing
Now that ipod is corrupted, go to itunes and choose restore to put your ipod in like new shape
Then plug it in to download songs again.

Did you reset your iPod? Try this. It worked for me when mine froze up.

Hold down the center button and the menu button(top of the wheel) together for about 5-10 seconds. You may have to try it more than once. That should unfreeze it.

Make sure your computer's USB ports are 2.0 (USB 1.1 is acceptable but that may cause the freezing) It may be the iPod's problem. Try holding Menu and Center Button for 10 seconds. They when you see the apple logo, quickly hold Menu and Rewind button. You will enter Disk mode, now plug your iPod into the computer! :)
