im 23. i have pretty extreme social anxiety. so i hate big parties and bars and crowds. pretty much anywhere where im expected to socialize with strangers and people will look at me... sounds weird, i know... but thats just how i am. last new years, i had a really nice time when i got a 2 bedroom suite at a local hotel with my boyfriend and invited 3 of our close friends. we had plenty of booze, and watched movies and played games and were just silly and completely comfortable in our pjs all night! no driving drunk, no creepy strangers, and best of all, we didnt have to clean up our mess!

It depends on why you are shy. Are you shy because you don't like crowds of people? Do you feel awkward around others? Do you feel embarrassed about yourself? I guess what I'm asking is...what is the root of your shyness?

If you feel awkward and uncomfortable around people, a large group might be better because any social blunder you perceive yourself as doing will be masked by the crowd and will likely go unnoticed (even if it was a real blunder and not a negative self-perception). However, if you just don't like crowds, you might do better in a small gathering where there are more opportunities to talk to people and get to know others.

Personally, I am of the latter variety. I dislike large crowds and am considered fairly shy, so I tend to go to smaller New Years parties where I know at least one person well and then I mingle in the smaller groups.

Hope that helps.
