Or maybe ignorant is the right word. I woke up this morning and out of nowhere I am hammered with "you need to stop listening to rap, its unproductive and nothing but negative images"
Then insued a whole day of arguments. My parents gang up on me at the most random times!
My question is, when you listen to well thought out lyrics that have a meaning (Talib Kweli, Lupe, Rakim, POS, etc) what is wrong with it? My parents are saying "you need a postitive balance, you cant just be all rap" which is WHAT I DO. I happen to have (call it small if you want) a library of 2000+ songs of all genres, I just listen to rap more than I used to.
Maybe what I should do is sit down with my parents and let them know about the creative side of rap. Maybe I should burn them a mixtape (no clue if this would work) of LYRICAL rap that isnt BS "crank that" crap. Any ideas? I dont want my parents turning against me or holding prejudices against me because I listen to rap..
I hope that made sense lo

As an adult whose opinion of rap as a whole is pretty low, I think that you're on the right track. I personally believe there are good songs & positive artists in all genres of music. So, find the lyrics that you listen to (don't water it down), and print them out to accompany your mixtape. If you're comfortable enough to have a discussion with them about the content of the songs, by all means do it. Let them see that you're not listening just because everyone else does. Give them the reasons you like particular songs or artists. It's amazing how people can be persuaded by logic and civil actions. Best of luck!

Print out the lyrics to some of the best and worst. You know some of it is crap...so show all sides. Maybe once they see that not ALL of it is crap, they will relent a little.
Beyond that...if you're under 18 and living in your parents' home - just remember that "parents' roof, parents' rule." Deal with it until you're old enough to be on your own. That will come far sooner than you think.

i really like what you planning already. but, thinks that are hostel always go over better if both parties have full stomachs. so, take you parents out to eat and then back at home, give them a MUCH NEEDED RAP LESSON.
and
bring up the fact that your sure their parents didn't approve of all the music, they might have listened to.
good luck, in rooting for you.

I guess. But.. My parents grew up on Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, etc. So they yell at the radio playing Soulja Boy or SHop Boyz.

I think that your idea about the mixtape is a good plan. It may be the only way to get them off your back. If you tell them you want them to listen to it they are liable not to and just let it go.

the battle between kids and parents regarding music has been going on for many years. ask if the parents remember the days when rock and roll was the devils music, record destroying, etc. most of the music of my day that was so "Bad", is now elevator music!
the battle continues!

LOL Tell your parents to stop listening to country... tell them it makes them look like drunkin hicks and it sends a bad message for you as a young adult.
