I function very poorly socially; I have a bad case of shyness and a slight case of agoraphobia. I become fascinated/obsessed with things such as art, space, weather phenomenon, rain, gigantism, speed (physics) not fast cars, music, counting/collecting in my mind: dog breeds, rocks, lists of old Slavic/Polish names, Slavic surnames, thinking about large numbers, race/ethnicity, genealogy, ethnology, evolution of culture and language, I start to create my own languages and fantasy worlds, I make countess lists of all the Polish names, surnames, and place names, and translate Serbian, Croatian, Russian, names surnames and place names into Polish, I create new words and phrases, I get fascinated by Mathematics to the point where I stay up all night doing all the exercises in all my old math books for no reason (trigonometry through multivariable calculus). I get fascinated by what happens to sewage water, I want to contribute to the world, from the stupidest (the sewage system), to the more worthwhile (language and culture). I just don’t know how to normally socialize with my peers, and all this stuff is taking its toll.

People like you, and maybe me, can't socialize with our peers because we are so intelligent and dynamic that in comparison they're like sad little animals running around in their social circles. Why even bother with people like that. They'll just frustrate you as you try to help them, your expert advice going unheeded, your time wasted trying to figure out what makes them tick, and how to get them to like you, when their problems are permanent and impossible.

What you want to do is continue to follow your interests and passions and decide on a goal and work towards that with all your focus. This work and any achievements you make is the path to loving yourself and true happiness.

You might also consider taking up hiking or mountain biking if you don't have a physical hobby and you might meet someone out there doing that. The secret of making conversation is to have a common interest. If you want to talk to average guys then you'd have to waste time learning about sports, wrestling, and wine or something? Girls only care about finding a good provider. Even if you're ubernerd, ubernerd with steady income and no social skills is still a potential mate.

There is nothing wrong with following your passions. No one knows better, than what’s best for you than you do, or so it appears. I would follow through with your gut instincts. Its good to take up hobbies and just about everything that is of interest to you. It sounds as though your in high school Please forgive me if this is not true. You’ll have more time to social later, but if you want to do so, then don’t be lead by others down popular paths which may not be good for you in the future. Decisions have consequences, and making bad decisions, you’ll also suffer. Just remember that accepting responsibility is par for the course as an adult.
I am sure that you’ll do fine, because you sound very intelligent.

There's nothing wrong with you. You probably have a high IQ and are bored by your more ordinary peers. My husband was like this when he was younger and now he's into so much stuff and can do all kinds of things. He has a vast general knowledge and has a very high IQ.

You need to find people that you can relate to. I wasn't into the kind of stuff that my peers were into when I was at school so I didn't fit in. It is very lonely.

If you're in the UK then contact MENSA who have clubs that you can join and meetings all over the country.

Please don't think that there's something the matter with you......you're gifted, but I know that's hard to cope with sometimes.

Could well be Aspergers Syndrome
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=aspergers+&spell=1

My partner describes it as autism for very bright people. (I'm Aspergers too.)

A lot of computer & tech and academic 'geeks' are also Asbergers.

There's an online test here.

Don't be put off by the site, you don't have to join. It's adapted from one on the Wired site , but Wired messed up and theirs doesn't work out the results. The 'Geeks' on this site replicated it so it does work. Or did last time I looked.

Good luck, I don't tell people I work with, I know they think I'm a bit weird, but its just the way I am. My partner and friends know and what Asbergers is and just adapt to me and how I am. I didn't realise what I had for a long time. I'm not saying lifes always easy, it isn't but it can be dealt with.

there are support groups etc
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=aspergers+support+uk&btnG=Search&meta=

They're point you to where you can get a professional opinion if you want.

Good luck. Much of it can be seen as a gift (a very lively mind, if a bit obsessive at times.) but I have felt - apart from others - for much of my life and found it difficult to establishing and maintaining friendships etc. I've had a lot of girlfriends, finding those that understand and are able to work around it can be hard, but they're out there.

From the list that you just put up there (compulsive listmaking?) I would gamble that you have a touch of OCD as well.
There is no easy answer. You need to see a therapist that can develop target behaviours for you to work on and set socialization goals for you. This may take long months/years of effort but the result can be worth it if you are serious and committed.

Good luck.
