Provided they don't become stupid like they did in the nineties and unload any young talent, they should make the playoffs in 2009.
This year they are making strides in the right direction. Glass finally opened the pocketbook and signed a couple of key players (Even though Guillen is suspended for dope use, he'll make an impact when he gets back) This year (2008) they should finish near .500 and in third behind the Indians and the Tigers.
Provided everything remains roughly the same, the year experience will do wonders for the young pitching staff and some of the young pivotal players. Then in the 2008 off season if they pick up another key free agent, they should contend for a playoff spot in 2009.
As long as the Royals don't revert to their nineties mentality of unloading young talent for washed up players or unproven rookies, they should compete in the coming years and not be a waste of time in baseball.

I'm actually happy to see a question on here about the Royals. And I think this is a good one. I honestly think the Royals are three, maybe four years out from making the playoffs. They would absolutely have to win the AL Central though. NO chance for a wildcard spot. There are too many good, young, talented teams in the AL right now. My only reservation on them making a play off run in the near future is they have no pitching. I think Alex Gordon and David Dejesus and Luke Hovuchear are the future of that team. Time will tell. I think 2010 might not happen, but maybe 2012 seems more plausible.

Right now (before I see what the 2008 version of the Royals is going to look like) I was thinking they would around 2010 or 2011. They still have some work to do on the starting rotation and need their core of young players to continue to develop. As long as Butler, Gordon, Pena, Teahan and a few others continue to get better, the Royals will be lineup to watch out for in the next few years.
GO ROYALS!!!

As a Royal fan i remember the days of Schuerholz. I was disappointed when he signed with the Braves and look what the Braves have done since. Dayton Moore is a protege of Schuerholz and the Royals saw a marked improvement in his first year. I would say that we will see improvements again in 2008 and 9 and maybe be in contention in 2010.

By improving their farm system and signing key free agents, the Royals have taken steps in the right direction towards respectability. The blueprint for small market teams has been set by the A's, Indians, Rockies, etc., and K.C. is starting to follow in these teams footsteps. With careful planning and steady improvement, it won't be long before the Royals are competing for a playoff spot. Maybe as soon as two years from now!

The Royals are headed in the right direction, but the thing that might keep them from making the playoffs in the next few years is that the other teams are still better.

I would like to see the royals get to the playoffs, they are not a bad team just in a market that does not allow for a high payroll. Draft right, make wise choices and be the marlins of years ago.
money is not all, but it does buy players...and yes i am a Boston red sox fan. now only if the mlb was like the nfl and had a hard salary cap to make it more equal the Royals would have been a better team years ago (them and the rays,)

I think it is a good possibility. They have some good talent in Alex Gordon, David Dejesus, Billy Butler, and some good young arms. Because of the AL's strength right now, they have to win the central to make the playoffs. They have to go through the Indians and Tigers (Who will win WS next year-2008). Both teams look built for future but the KC Royals have a shot down the road, as long as they keep it together. They usually get one shot about every five or six years, because of how the team has been run. If they get a shot, they better take it and play to win, unlike my Chokeland Imbeciles did this year. Eric Wedge should be fired.

Okay, I love going to Kauffman Stadium every few years to watch my Indians play. Your stadium is my favorite-and I have been to many. The food in your city is second to none.
Now lets talk baseball. I love watching KC-pesky little snots. They don't act like they know they are suppose to be bad. They play hard. Alot of up and coming talent-I don't know if they can keep it though. Greinke could turn into something eventually as well.
Thing is-I don't know if you can contend soon. I do think in the next 1-2 years you will pass up the Twins.
Thing is that Detroit and Cleveland-especially Cleveland is very very young.
I don't see you beating either anytime soon. I think you know that-sucks for you guys in KC-but it's reality.
I would be interested in seeing you guys pass up Chicago this year-still, I don't know if Chicago will be as bad as they were last year. If they are-smoke 'em!
2010? Not sure, really not sure...long shot I think.

2010 seems realistic, however, unfortunately for the Royals (and my White Sox), the AL central is VERY strong. The Tigers and Indians, and arguably the Twins would have to suffer significant declines in the next few years to open up space for the Royals, and I'm not sure that's going to happen
