A direct flight to Panama City takes 10 hours from Los Angeles. And yes, we did calculate the time change. Yet, Panama City is only about 500 miles farther than NYC, which is a 5.5 to 6 hr trip.

LA to Panama City (CST) is 1,921 miles (500 mph) Time =3 hrs
LA to NYC (EST) is 2,475 miles (500mph) Time= 4 hrs
You must have sat on the tarmack for 5 hours. Panama City shouldn't be but a 5 hr trip from LAX. NYC should be about 7 hours.

There are many reasons why this might be.
First would depend on how fast the airplane on those routes is allowed to travel. Maybe there is a restriction on air speed going from Panama to LA that is lower than the restriction on your way to NYC.
Second, it would depend on what flight route is used. No flight path is a straight line flight between the cities relative to the ground. Almost all flights follow what is called the "Great Circle" Flight path. A great circle on a globe like the earth is one that follows a diameter of the earth. So, it is possible that the ground straight line path is more in tune with the great circle path between Panama and NYC than it is from Panama and LA.
A third posibility could depend on available air space. There could be military, city or other restircted areas that do not allow commercial airlines to use based on safety and military needs.
There are probably more reasons why the longer distance takes less time.

because a direct flight does not mean non-stop....when i searched the 10 hour flight had layovers which add time to the trip....but i also found flights of 6 hours as well

NYC - reliable transportation, jogging, yet gets chilly. trashy too. humid interior the summertime. reliable foodstuff. la - traffficc.. in no way the 405. one hundred ten perhaps. loss of jogging. amazing surfing. amazing climate. reliable foodstuff. continuously warm. get a tan even in simple terms by applying jogging. i think of in case you kin in SoCal - then la. while you're new to the two cities, manhattan.

i think with the high altitudes going west to east gives you a draft or something pushing you along and thus getting you there faster XD
