Yes, any SD card will work. Providing, of course, that it is a regular SD card and not a mini or micro one. Micro and mini SD cards need a special adaptor, but if you have the adaptor, they will work as well.
However, you can only back up your gameplay on SD cards, you can not save the games you download from the virtual console on the SD cards--they will only save to the console memory.
You can also use the SD cards to save and display photos and play MP3 songs on your Wii.

No you need to get a special SD card to save games on it. If you put a camera SD card in the WII and go to the photo channel the you can play around with the photos.
