i received my acceptance packet for DePaul a few days ago and, although i'm also applying to Northwestern, i'm seriously considering going to DePaul [as a backup plan if i don't get into NU].

as a non-Catholic, i wanted to get an idea of how strict the rules are at DePaul in terms of curfews, coed dorms, ... and stuff. i currently live in Texas and i know that at HBU, students are required to take a sort of spiritual course that couples with community service or something in order to graduate. i'm wondering if DePaul is similar? [christ, i hope not.]

thanks for your help!

jennelle -- i wasn't aware that i mentioned my fear of being "converted" anywhere in my question...? and i'm not "SO" worried. in fact, i'm not worried at all. you really shouldn't assume ... and to post answers for the sole reason of posting answers [and possibly raise your 'point' count] isn't exactly helpful. just sayin'. it seems as if you don't have anything worthy to contribute to my question, which i am honestly interested about. how useless.

neniaf/sparki77 -- thanks. i knew about those course requirements and i actually look forward to 'em. it's a pretty cool system [and played a huge part in my decision to apply]. but i was wondering more about the RULES ... at your Jesuit school, what are the policies on curfews, etc? because i read somewhere that DePaul is incredibly strict when it comes to curfews and intervisitation and, i mean i definitely want an education, but i do want to have my fun, too. is this making sense? idunno. bleugh.

DePaul is hardly Catholic at all any more. It certainly wasn't when I got accepted there 26 years ago.

(I was also accepted at Northwestern, but I went to Drake to study Journalism. It was farther from home, and that's what I wanted. Got a good education, too.)

They are Vincentian, which is a relatively conservative Catholic order. One course would be surprisingly little to me. I work at a Jesuit school, which is pretty liberal, and our students have to take two theology courses. I picked this off their website to show what is required of all undergraduates.

At DePaul, our core curriculum is known as the Liberal Studies Program, and consists of two components. The first, called the Common Core, emphasizes writing skills, computational and technological proficiencies, and critical and creative thinking skills, as well as an introduction to the urban and Vincentian nature of the University. Common Core experiences include the First-Year Program; the Sophomore Seminar on Multiculturalism in the United States; the Junior Experiential Learning; and the Senior Capstone.

The second component of the Liberal Studies Program is made up of six distinct Learning Domains: 1) Arts and Literature; 2) Philosophical Inquiry; 3) Religious Dimensions; 4) Scientific Inquiry; 5) Self, Society, and the Modern World; and 6) Understanding the Past. These areas reflect a conventional liberal arts and sciences curriculum, yet are not discipline based. While the curriculum is quite varied, the Liberal Studies Program as a whole shares these four learning goals: 1) Reflectiveness; 2) Value Consciousness, 3) Multicultural Perspective, and 4) Creative and Critical Thinking.

All undergraduate students (except School for New Learning) participate in the Liberal Studies Program regardless of college and major. Liberal Studies program requirements vary by college.

We don't have any curfews at all. I can't speak to other schools, but I would say that is pretty unusual these days.

How catholic is it? Not very. They like their students to be catholic but they don't force it on you in any way whatsoever. You can walk in with a bottle of vodka into some of the dorms. I think the rules are actually pretty... nonexistent. It's a lot of good smart kids, so they don't need to enforce rules like at the crazy party schools.
As far as the classes. Yes you do need to take 2 religious classes, but they don't need to be catholic classes. In fact you can't take 2 catholic classes, the 2 classes must be from different backgrounds.. I took Buddhism for one and a business ethics class for the other.
You can spend all 4 years at DePaul not even noticing it’s Catholic or you can be a devoted Christian. Your choice.

If your SO worried why did you even apply. Did you know that Muslims, Catholics, Methodists, Hindi, etc go to HBU and that B is Baptist and their just fine.

Religion courses such as New Testament and Old Testament aren't meant to "convert" you but as a way of making you more worldly.

And at HBU, there is a spiritual life points requirement, most people go to convocation (almost like church) and STILL that is not meant to convert you. It's just a requirement that you knew about signing in.

But there are many ways to get those religion requirements. Some schools have service projects, after school tutoring, yoga/meditation classes, ANYTHING you can think of.

They probably don't have coed dorms (big flippin deal) they have visitation hours and whatever else you want to do.....I'm sure you can go somewhere else. On campus apartments however are usually coed but are reserved for upper classmen.

Again, if you're SO worried about coming out in four years being a staunch Catholic then DON'T go.............but again, they aren't trying to convert you. They want to give you an education

EDIT: You said "christ I hope not" making it sound like you don't want to go to a religious schoo. You could have saved 25-50 bucks on a application fee if you're going to say things like "christ I hope it's not strict and religious" tool
