First of all, Tarzan is a fictional character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, an American writer. So, there is nothing like a real ape as Tarzan. When the writer created Tarzan, he wanted Tarzan to be an ideal model of a hero figure who could attract lots of females.
When the series of Tarzan story were put on movies, Burroughs wanted Johnny Weissmuller, who was a famous swimmer in US then, to act as Tarzan.
As Weissmuller was very handsome, it would have spoiled all attractive charms of Tarzan if he had had a beard.
Incidentally, Tarzan's wife, Jane is also described as a paragon of white beauty.
Just Imagine Tarzan with black skin and a beard.

You have a perfectly legitimate question. The reason Tarzan didn't have a beard was down to the fact that the film makers forgot to think things through. His beard should have been almost as long as his hair! Blame Hollywood.

We are supposed to believe (and I don't have my copies of the novel or of Burne Hogarth's adaptation here but I'm consulting Joe Kubert's adaptation, that he taught himself to read his father's books. While reading, my understanding was, he came to understand that white people like him didn't grow beards and they didn't grow beards because they shaved them off. So he took his father's straight razor and somehow managed to teach himself without cuting his own throat. Really, there are too many fun remarks to make but this is the original story.

He doesn't have a beard because he's related to my brothers. None of them can grow a beard either!

Maybe he's an American Indian. I don't know the whole story all the way around, but do we know what race he is? Or his age without Disney's input? Pocahontas was about 12 remember.

It's a story, fairy tale, folktale, thing. Anything can happen. There can be a 100 year old hobo that has been a hobo for all his life and he could be completely hairless in a story.
