We do something kinda similar

My family has a tradition where Santa comes and brings another present on New Years Eve. The Tradition started with my great-great-grandparents.

The story we were told as children is that Santa came to my great-great-grandparents house on Christmas eve and they were still awake. When he came inside he asked my great-great-grandpa if he could help with one of the reindeer who was sick. My great-great-grandpa was a farmer and knew a few things about taking care of livestock. While he was taking care of the reindeer my great-great-grandma fixed Santa some hot tea. After the reindeer was all better Santa thanked my great-great-grandparents and told them that he would return with a second gift for the family a week later on New Years eve and that he would continue to do so for all of their decendants for years to come.

The true story is that on Christmas eve my great-great-grandparents found a note under the tree from one of their kids asking for a special present that he had not told them he wanted. Desperatley wanting to hold on to the child-like beliefs of thier youngest child for a few more years they made up a great story that has saved many other parents in my family from similar situations through out the years.

As a thank you for Santa doing this we keep up our tree til after New Years and put out Tea and Cookies for him again New Years Eve.

We don't Bex, but it's a great idea. What we tend to do especially with the younger two, is put away some of their toys and in about a few months time, we bring them back out again. They all get too much every year, and it is impossible to play with everything, so we just feel that they would appreciate the things more after a few months.

No have never done that but my friends family have what they call emergency presents.

I went round on boxing day one year and they gave me a gift, I felt awful as I hadn't got them anything but then my friend explained they always have emergency presents wrapped up under the tree for if unexpected guests come over.
I went over this boxing day as it's now a tradition and there under the tree were all the emergency presents still!

What a lovely idea Bex - haven't done it and now don't have little children around me but it is still a lovely tradition. My husband and I do carry Christmas on in a way because his birthday is on the 4th January and mine is the 27th January so we have two months of celebrations! xx

We used to do that in my family and I got gifts on the 28th Dec too so I only had to wait 2 days between each occasion! It meant the rest of the year was low on gifts though so I envied my friends who had summer birthdays..
My sisters do it for their grandchildren and I still give my adult children a New Year gift! It's usually something silly in our family!
Nice to know others do it too!

Have never given presents at New Year. On many occassions my children got extra presents near Easter because I had forgotten where I had hidden them!

I like Teresacmt 's story as well as yours -that's nice
.
We leave a small gift under the tree for each kid/grandkid to open here just so I can see their faces when they open it -then I don't suffer from 'empty nest syndrome'!
We went to Spain one January for the 'feast of the 3 kings' - they save the big presents for 12 th night and distrbute them to the kiddies in huge street parties - that's nice too

That sounds like a wonderful idea to spin things out a bit....I am sure that there have been occasions in my family where family members (including me) have thought that the presents were all opened too quickly....we have never done anything quite like your tradition in our family, though, I must admit.

It sounds good to me!

My sister does something lovely she buys a lot of things from pound shop wraps them up pops them on girls beds from Santa. When they get up they open say half of presents and do not open rest until after lunch they never mind thisas it means they appreciate and play with all they have.
A nice idea to save a present until new year.
