What does it do and how much does it cost?

The Wiikey is a type of mod chip--which you solder into your game console so you can play "homebrew" games--ie., games you've made by copying the original Wii game disks.

You can make copies of your games on DVDs, but they won't play in your console without soldering in a "mod chip" or Wiikey. (However, I understand the D2C chip is supposed to be better than the Wiikey.)

It is not illegal to solder in a Wiikey or mod chip, but if you do, you will void your warranty and Nintendo will not fix your console should it become damaged or need repair. It is legal to buy and use a mod chip as long as you only copy and play titles you own and legitimately purchased. What is not legal is to copy disks you rented or borrowed from your friends so you don't have to buy them.

As to how much they cost? There's actually some you can get for free, but generally they cost between $40 to $75.

I don't recommend doing so, but if you elect to buy and install one, please be aware that many people have fried their consoles doing so.

Here's a site you can go to to learn all risks and benefits from others who have purchased them. http://psx-scene.com/forums/wiikey/

Good luck!

P.S. I do not want to sound like an asshole, but if you mess up your Wii doing mods to it Nintendo might not fix it and we might not help you with problems you might have after installing that stuff.
