i am planning to bury about 40 ft of standard cat 5e. it will be placed inside pvc pipe (water pipe). i know condensation might be a problem if the sheathing is nicked or cut, but if it is in good condition would it break down in time, and become a problem.

I guess you are burying it outside? First close lightning strike and you can kiss your cable and anything it connects to good bye. I wouldn't recomend it

Like answer one, get outdoor cable at the very least. The main difference is in the jackets. outdoor jackets are thicker and made usually of rubber so they last much better in the elements. I usually use direct burial cat 5 for underground burial. It protects even better against water, freezing, flexing, etc.

I have used indoor cable in PVC pipe and it works just don't leave any end of the pipe open period! (Rats and mice and bugs love that!)

Why bother with indoor Cat5e cable when you can buy outdoor cat5e cable? The elements will deteriorate the outer casing and you run the risk of condensation in the cable.

I have never used indoor Ethernet cable outdoor but I have run outdoor Ethernet cables just as you describe.

Do a yahoo search for "exterior cat5 cable".
