Take each and every moment as it comes!!!
Sounds absolutely pathetic... but some of the best advice is given out in a cartoon - SouthPark-'Goths'!!! - Hear me out, before you stick me in the 'fruitcake' catergory!!!
A common theme in the show is that of a moral or message being told towards the end. I this episode a character called 'Butters', who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, delivers the moral, thus:
Asked if he wanted to join a group of Goth kids (to mope, and write poems about how BAD life is!), he replies,
"Yeah... I'm sad! But at the same time I'm really happy that something can make me feel that sad... it's like... it makes me feel alive, y'know? It makes me feel human."
"The only way I could feel this sad now, is if I felt somethin' really good before, so I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feelin' is, like a beautiful sadness... I guess that sounds stupid..."

Okay, there are simpler ways of expressing the same....
'Things can Only get better...'
'Sh** happens.....' - Confucius (Not me!)
'The grass is always greener.....',.....'Always someone worse off than yourself......', etc, etc.... But!!! his speech appears to have had a very positive effect on people as internet searches lend weight to. People have taken this as a comfort when they are sad, whether it be at the end of a relationship or indeed any sad time. In terms of Butters' character, it represents his optimism towards and generally positive outlook on life - where Stan in the same situation chose to reject life, Butters chooses to find the positives, thus enabling Stan to see the bigger picture and abandon his Gothic lifestyle. SAD AREN'T I? Using a cartoon as a refence point, but what the hell!!???
Good luck, and Happy New Year!

PS/ The Question was, 'How do you beat the hum-drum of life. And, generally make yourself happier in signs of sadness?'
