My two current favorites are Dream Theater and They Might Be Giants.
Dream Theater is a progressive rock band in the tradition of my favorites from the 70s like Yes, UK, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd, but with a harder edge inspired by bands like Metallica, Pantera, and Tool. They take virtuoso playing to heights that very few bands ever matched, even in the 70s heyday of progressive rock, but they have great hooks and memorable melodies too. Their "Scenes From a Memory" is my all-time favorite rock opera, a truly moving and dramatic masterpiece featuring some great songs, including the unforgettable "The Spirit Carries On".
They Might Be Giants are, in my humble opinion, the most alternative of the "alternative" bands. For the most part, "alternative" rock has become part of the mainstream, but TMBG have always had their own unique sound, a freeform mixture of rock, country, jazz, polkas, salsa, and anything else they feel like throwing into the mix. You have to admire any band that can make accordion playing so ineffably cool.

Genesis, when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. They made some brilliant music, and somehow just had something unusual about them. Yet, they were not loud and heavy, but managed to get the balance right with their songs.
The best songs from them are Stagnation, Supper's Ready, White Mountain, Shepherd, One Eyed Hound, Twilight Alehouse, The Musical Box.
Another band is Earth Opera. They made just two albums in 1968 and 1969, and combined folk with psychedelic rock.

UB40.
I love everything that they stand for. A group of young men from different racial backgrounds united in music. Not only did they make exellent music but they have fought against racism, Injustice and unemployment for as long as they have been formed.
Nearly all of the band were unemployed when the first started out and they purchased their first instruments with money from compensation the lead singer recieved.
Listen to -
Present Arms
One in Ten
Tyler
For some strong messages.

Pink Floyd when Syd Barrett was in them. They moved music into a totally new direction, Syd sang about all the things that came into his head and not just boy-meets-girl stuff (though he did that as well in a weird way) and Syd was the first really popular singer to sing in an English accent instead of a put-on American one.

The Beatles, The children of rock and roll never grow old!
They make me happy when I listen to them, and I love the whole culture that surrounds them.
Stone Roses, original brit pop personified. John Squire is a hero, and Monkey Boy is a true showman

Oooh, I have three, I think, that I can't decide between at the moment, but it changes often:
Pink Floyd - I don't know whether 'thoughtful' music is the best way to describe it but thats what I'm going for.
Robots In Disguise - Their music makes me feel quite happy, its good for cheering me up I think, and its fun.
Adam and The Ants - Music that, once again, cheers me up.

I loved several bands over the years for different reasons, Thin Lizzy for their guitar riffs, T-Rex for Marc Bolans charisma/lyrics and stage presence, Albert Lee for his guitar playing, Queen for their energy/harmonies and unforgetable stage shows and Duran Duran for being everything I wanted to be as a musician.
but just now its got to be CODA because thats the band I'm in at the moment
