We have a gas stove with an electric ignition. At first the oven dial would not turn, you could push it down but it would not turn and thus would not ignite. We have not had time to work on it until today(about 4 days total unusued). But now we got the dial to turn and push down but it is as if there is no gas coming out to ignite. How can we fix this with out getting a profession and without buying a new one?

Please have a professional check it out. a gas stove is too dangerous to fool with if you are not sure of what you are doing. Good luck

The oven igniter will be made of a ceramic material that will glo cherry red when electricity is applied to it, which is what the gas temp control knob does when you turn it. In the broiler, near the rear of the oven pan you should see a bright glowing element, if it's not glowing at all then it's broken entirely in two. If it is glowing and the oven still doesn't light then it most likely is cracked and needs to be replaced. The element must heat to a certain temp. to allow the proper electical current to flow to the gas safety valve at the base of the burner. Once the valve receives the proper current it opens and allows gas to flow to the burner and when it touches the glowing element it ignites. It's not rocket science to replace one, but it does require a moderately handy person and some tools. If you think you can do it, get the make and model of your unit and call a local appliance parts distributor. They will be able to get one for you. They usually cost between $50 - $75, depending on your particular unit.

If you press the knob and the gas doesn't come out, the valve in the knob is bad, and will need to be replaced.
If you're not experienced in gas, you need to hire a professional.
If you end up with a gas leak, the stove not working will be the least of your problems.
