Do you mean an algorithm? It is just a stepwise process used to attain some result.

They use these in computer science more than anything else.

Most uses of the term relate to computer programming. For a major exception to that rule, look up the "Euclidean Algorithm", which underlies much of number theory and abstract algebra.

An algorithm is just a set of steps. Like doing long division, multiplying two digit numbers. Anything that is not purely memorized like times tables would be considered an algorithm.
