I think you sort of messed up your own joke. Needles come prepackaged and sterilized. It does not make any sense to spend all the extra money to buy a hundred needles or so unsterilized needles for lethal injections and then risk the possibility they are misused on the infirmary's other patients....

But you probably want to know why they sterilize a death row inmate's arm for lethal injection. 1) Because it is good practice for the medical staff doing it - (It partially takes their mind on what they are about to do if they treat it like every other injection and again, practice on doing it right for the next time when it might be another type of injection. 2) have you heard of a last minute call from the governor? A lethal injection is several needles. The first one isn't lethal, and still not too late to be saved. Why risk an infection also?

I would say in case they have to take them out again. There have been incidents where the condemned has been strapped to the gurney with the needles inserted in their arms and the saline solution flowing when there has beeen a stay of execution and later a reprieve. It wouldn't be very good if the reprieved person contracted some horrible disease from an unsterilised needle.

its part of the thing about treating the condemned with dignity. Doesn't make much sense, but the law never does.
The other thing is, if they were to use a dirty needle, and for some reason a last-minute pardon caused the execution to be stopped and the condemned to be revived, the resul, ting effect of the dirty needle (tetanus, aids, etc) could give the reprieved convist something to sue the state over.

It's a policy, they have to sterilize the needle no matter what.
